Saving energy means saving money, plain and simple.  It also means less pollution where the energy is generated and in most cases less fossil fuels being depleted to create the energy.  But besides costly upgrades like photovoltaic solar panels and the most basic strategies like changing light bulbs, how can we as homeowners make strides to save energy on a daily basis?  For three more Saturdays this October, you can learn how to reduce energy consumption by 40% in the Energy House 3, presented by Energy Resource Management Construction Co. (ERM).

Energy House 3 is the third demonstration house presented by ERM, the first two located in Northern Virginia. ERM is a local company specializing in energy design and installation to small businesses and households in the DC metro area.

The Energy House can be found at #9 A & B 8th Street SE, an existing 1890s row house..  The demonstration project was undertaken by the homeowners with the assistance of ERM at a discounted rate in exchange for the ability to showcase the house as a demonstration project.  The house was evaluated for opportunities to make it more energy efficient.  The kitchen was renovated, the house insulated, and an interactive home energy management system was installed that monitors energy use and has already proven almost a 40% reduction in energy costs.  Features like insulated window shades added to the overall efficiency.  Living room and kitchen renovations were envisioned by MKO Design.

If you’re interested in seeing the Energy House Three firsthand, the home will be open for tours October 1, 8, and 22 (all Saturdays) from noon to 3:00 p.m.  The tours are free but pre-registration is required.  For more information or to register, head to the official website.
