Free Paddling Nights Along the Anacostia

I’m told I live just over 2,000 feet from a river, but despite living here a better part of a decade, I’ve had next to no interaction with it. It’s a mystery to me, seen mostly as a blur from my car when I drive out East Capitol.

Fortunately, the Anacostia Watershed Society can help us all out by letting us explore the Anacostia by canoe every other Wendesday through August. Starting tomorrow (well, really, two weeks ago but you already dropped the ball on that one, didn’t you?), the AWS will host Paddling Nights, free of charge to all. That’s right, just come on down to their boathouse, put on one of their life jackets, and take a canoe out on the Anacostia.

Paddling night runs from 5-8 pm Wednesday at the Anacostia Community Boathouse at 1900 M ST SE. To get there, go down to M Street, take a left, and follow it to the very end. And I do mean the very end. There are some other boathouses along the way, but this one is recognizable as a very large, white temporary structure.

As if that wasn’t enough to get you slackers out on the water, AWS will have a grill going with free food!
