Hello there, Capitol Hill! Have you had a lovely week? Has the weather been psychotic enough for you, covering everything from hailstones to mist and fog and wind to the most beautiful sunny skies? Could it be that March was in like a lion and will go out… like a lion as well? So many questions, right? Here is one more: have you gone to see the cherry blossoms yet? They peaked on the 29th and will be gone soon!
Since we all know the weekend starts on Thursday, March 31st, why not kick it off with a last hurrah for Women’s History Month and go to Girl For Sale at the Corner Store, 900 South Carolina Avenue, SE. Girl For Sale is a collection of art and readings in collaboration with the Girl Museum and the American Poetry Museum? Sound intriguing? Then please RSVP by emailing kris [at] cornerstorearts [dot] org and write “Girl Museum” in the subject line.
Friday brings a break in our icky weather along with it, which means that heated patios like the one at Café 8 and the Chesapeake Room should be perfect venues for one cocktail or twenty right after work. Or maybe you can have a little dinner at one of the lovely Barracks Row eateries and then stroll over to Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th Street, SE by 8 pm, when CHAW presents CHAWbaret Ate: Off the Menu, which is an evening of pop songs, standards, and showtunes to satisfy any appetite. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Email victor [at] chaw [dot] org or call 202-547-6839 for more information and don’t worry: if you should miss Friday’s CHAWbaret, it will also be going on Saturday, 2 April, also at 8 pm.
Speaking of Saturday, and speaking of Liz Taylor –no, I know we weren’t but let’s pretend we were, okay? Wouldn’t you like to celebrate the violet-eyed icon by having a mini-movie marathon in a cool venue, which is itself surrounded by iconic and soon-to-be-iconic restaurants and bars? And what do you know, the Atlas will be showing four of Elizabeth Taylor’s most critically and commercially acclaimed movies this weekend! If I were you, I would plan on seeing them all: A Place in the Sun plays Saturday at 7 pm; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof plays Saturday at 9:30 pm; National Velvet plays Sunday, April 3rd at 3 pm; and Father of the Bride plays Sunday at 5:30 pm. All screenings are $5, which is an amazing bargain; and if you purchase tickets to two or more screenings, they will knock a dollar off each ticket! To boot, part of the proceeds will go to the Whitman Walker Clinic! More information? Go to the Facebook event page for more details!
Just as much of an amazing deal, but of a completely different sort, is Sneaker Con. Yes, that’s right: a convention for sneaker heads, sneaker coveters and people who love shoes a little too much. I am getting a little giddy as I type, and I don’t even wear sneakers (much)! From noon until 7 pm on Saturday, the cool quotient at the Atlas is going to go up exponentially as more than forty vendors unpack their coolest, rarest and most amazing footwear for you to peruse, buy, sell, or trade. For just $12, you can be part of the awesomeness. More details? Go to Sneaker Con’s website or follow them on Twitter!
Now that we’ve arrived at Sunday, April 3rd, tell me: how are your baking skills? If they are even marginally good, why not enter a baking contest that benefits a worthy cause? Greater DC Cares’ “Sunday Suppers” is hosting a Northeast pie contest to benefit the Rosedale Community Scholarship. The delicious pie goodness –awarding crusty gloriousness in the Sweet, Savory, Novelty, Presentation, and People’s Choice categories– will be happening at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street, NE, from 2-5 pm. Did you miss all the fun movies at the Atlas, but you still have a hankering for some Liz at her finest and a purple drink? (No, not a purple drank– it’s not that kind of a tribute.) Then walk on down to Wisdom, 1432 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, starting at 5 pm, where Sunday’s movie night will be a Liz Taylor tribute, and purple drinks will be on special all night!
Bring it on, April!

Saturday from 11:00 to 4:00 there’s a Cherry Blossom Family Fun Festival at the Yards Park. It includes trapeze performances, paper lantern making, sake tasting and sushi.
