Happy St. Patrick’s Day weekend to you! How auspicious to start the weekend with this “holiday.” In my childhood we still had some relatives around connected to the Emerald Isle, so to celebrate our shared heritage we ate craggy scones and listened to Irish music while the grownups ended their meal with Irish coffee, a whisky/coffee/whipped cream concoction which required its own special coffee cup. I even spent a few years learning the traditional step dancing. And this was before Lord of the Dance made Step Dancing… cool?
Today the holiday is more widely celebrated by drinking cheap green beer out of plastic cups and eating corned beef, so you may want to take it easy this weekend. Lauren pretty much covered how to celebrate this evening. But if you are still standing, here’s what you can do:
If you aren’t up to the festivities celebrating Ireland’s patron saint this evening, you could flex your wits with some trivia at the Rock and Roll Hotel which is hosting a trivia night by the Trivia Kings. InQuizitive features several rounds of trademarked question styles that could be fun or really annoying because the description of the event makes trivia seem pretty complicated, but who knows.
Friday night you could get into the whole Spring Gala spirit by supporting one of our local schools. Ludlow Taylor is hosting their event, Ludlow Taylor in Lights at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The evening features live music, a silent and live auction and light hors d’oerves and a cash bar. Tickets are $35 and are available here.
Saturday get your body ready for all that spring cycling you swore you were going to do: at 1:30 Results the Gym is hosting a strength training master class for cyclists with Sandy George.
Take the wee little kids over to CHAW for a free performance by that toddler chanteuese, the Singing Lizard, who sings all the early childhood favorites and more.
That evening you can keep the Irish spirit alive with a preview performance of The Weir by Scena Theatre at the H Street Playhouse. Conor McPherson’s play depicts an evening of ghost stories in an Irish pub. The preview tickets are $10 and you can pick them up here.
Sunday will be a day meant for strolling the neighborhood. If you insist on being productive take advantage of Frager’s March Madness sale and get started on clearing out the yards and tree boxes and be ready for Spring!
