Tortilla Cafe on the Food Network

uploaded to flickr.com by karen horton

We know Washington, DC has fast become a foodie town, but we’re also getting more famous for our comfort foods and even our junk food.  Monday night on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” host Guy Fieri visited Tortilla Cafe, a local eatery that adds to our comfort-food cred.  Tortilla Cafe was featured for its authentic Salvadoran pupusa – a doughy pouch filled with cheese and pork.  The episode was taped in May 2010 and aired for the first time on January 3.

Tortilla Cafe is owned by Jose Canales, who also owns Canales Deli inside Eastern Market.  Canales opened the cafe to create and offer authentic foods from El Salvador and Mexico.  In addition to pupusas, the cafe offers tamales, empanadas, tacos, burritos, and a host of other breakfast and lunch dishes.

If you missed the show, the episode of “Triple D” will air again on the Food Network on January 14, 2011 at 9:00 p.m.

Tortilla Cafe has been my favorite place to eat in DC since it opened. Their prices, menu, quantity and quality of food can’t be beat. I’ve never been disappointed, where else can you get shrimp fajitas for $10?? The staff is the friendliest in this city hands down. Congrats!

Second. Can’t recommend Tortilla Cafe highly enough. The fajita salad is awesome and a fraction of what you’d pay at any other Mexican place in the neighborhood. Great bunch of people and one of the few places that still give service with a smile.

    It’s terrible.. don’t go.

Kidding, but it’s getting too crowded. Their papusas are excellent and their chili is extremely good.

it does get crowded on weekends during the market and sometimes at lunch, but i’ve never had to wait long for my food and you can always call ahead for takeout. on a nice day, their patio is a great spot to eat.

Love the pupusas. Happy to see them get recognition!
