The crazy-making and joy-inducing holidays are over. The time is bittersweet. Many feel a bit of a letdown as we all must return to normal life where we may NOT wear pajamas until noon and cookies once again become a sometimes food.
But with that letdown is also relief. New Year’s Day comes at the perfect time. A respite from merry-making and good cheer and small talk. January is welcomed along with the simple pleasures that hibernation brings. Goodbye butter and bacon, and hello miso soup and the gym. I didn’t know how much I missed you.
So this weekend included New Year’s Eve, I’m looking forward to hearing how everyone spent the evening.
Jon: Spent the New Year’s weekend in New York with family, thankfully skipping Times Square for the warmth of a fire and some cocktails at my parents’ house. We ventured into Manhattan on New Year’s Day, taking in Central Park and FAO Schwartz as well as stops for some nostalgic foods before heading back. We were fortunate to experience
a very uneventful trip home to DC with hardly a minute of traffic (even in the Evil Empire of Delaware).
Claudia: I spent my New Year’s on the Hill with dinner at Montmartre, followed by drinks at Wisdom and then Trusty’s. Saturday involved a lot of napping and movie watching and a game night at a friend’s place. Sunday I ventured to NW for brunch at Bar Pilar, then spent the rest of the day wrapping up house chores, watching football, writing blog posts and reading books.
Maria: Flew back in from the West Coast and toasted the new year quietly at home, with some incredibly amazing wine and sparkling wine. Stayed in, overate, and fawned over Mr. Darcy while the rest of the city cheered the Caps on.
Lauren I spent NYE with family and friends in MA. Saturday I lounged around (I’m sure this was due to the slight cold I’ve acquired and not in any way the result of a few too many drinks the night before). Saturday night I went to dinner on Cape Cod and Sunday I spent all day with my new bff, the New Jersey Turnpike.
Sharee: After trading illnesses with my husband for over a week, I was fortunate to finally feel well enough to be sworn in on Sunday as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 6A05. We skipped all the parties, however, in favor of hot tea, cough medicine and movies at home.
Robert: Spent New Year’s Eve with friends, was in bed at 12:01 AM. The weekend was spent quietly on the Hill, with only a quick trip to Ikea to remind me why I like spending quiet weekends on the Hill.
Jen: Capped off a week in the New York/New Jersey area with New Year’s with friends in Cold Spring, New York, a little village on the Hudson. Went cross country skiing for the first time and loved it. So much less terrifying than than awful downhill I’ve forced to try on several occasions. I observed heroic consumption of pork products in my three days there. Was happy to abstain from the pig but did enjoy my friend’s lovely St. Germain cocktail, a festive cap to the relaxing and snowy week up north.
