Monday Morning Circle Time

Hey everyone! Did you love your extra hour yesterday? Did you spend it sleeping in? Clearing out closets? Did you maybe indulge in a soothing Gilmore Girls marathon? Okay I didn’t do any of those things but nevermind, the “Fall Back” Sunday is my favorite day of the year. I have always liked the shortening of the days. In childhood it meant that Christmas was that much closer. As a grown up I love the forced hibernation brought on by the early nightfall. The excuse to warm up a house by baking and even in my advanced years, the anticipation of the holiday season still brings a thrill.

But the sweetest part of Fall Back Sunday? The kids are in bed early. You can’t beat that.

What did THIHers do with that extra hour?

Kate: We had a super mellow weekend, punctuated by great walks around the neighborhood each day. Sadly on Saturday evening we were confronted with the folly of trying to buy a baguette at P&C late in the day and made the bad choice of going to Safeway at 6 p.m. Thirty minutes I emerged. Yes, I am bitter and have foresworn Safeway, again. A yoga class at St. Marks on Sunday night mellowed me out a bit.

Nichole: Spent Friday night filming footage for the Hilly Awards on H Street. Saturday headed out to the river for the last canoe camping trip of the season. Stayed at the camp late on Sunday and both the pup and I are way too tired to try to make the P&C Market pig roast, so we’re off to bed before 8.

Maria: Went to see “Due Date” at an undisclosed off-Hill location and do not recommend it unless you’re a Robert Downey Jr. Fan.  Crashed a 40th birthday party and enjoyed a performance by Free Lobster Buffet on Saturday.   On Sunday, fell in love with the crunchy shrimp roll at Sticky Rice and fell in love with tons of furniture at the Eastern Market Flea Market. Will be in bed before 9.

Jon: Had a pretty full weekend of daddy-duty as my wife had to be at work both Saturday and Sunday mornings.  We shopped through Eastern Market Saturday morning and headed to the Yard Park to run around and burn off some energy.  Saturday night I celebrated my sister-in-law’s birthday at Biergarten Haus, which was both filling and fun.  Sunday morning was spent at the Natural History museum taking in what remains of some dinosaurs followed by the little one taking a 2-hour nap, which allowed me to take out window air conditioners start getting the yard ready for winter.

Kyra: I am certain I did absolutely nothing of interest this weekend.

David: Took it easy all weekend, only venturing beyond my block for food — and never left the Hill. Had dinner at Cafe 8 on Friday night and Ethiopic on Saturday night. Took it easy on Saturday and pulled the last of my tomatoes to make fried green tomatoes on Sunday.

Claudia: On Friday night I enjoyed dinner at Montemartre and called it an early night since I had been fighting off a cold all week.  Saturday morning I had breakfast with family at Le Pain Quotidien, then managed to get a replacement drivers license at the DMV in 30 minutes.  Saturday night I got dressed up to join a friend at a black tie event (my life is usually not so glamorous but that was certainly a fun change of pace), after which we stayed out far too late and were grateful to have the clocks move back at 2am.  On Sunday I caught up on house chores, had lunch with a friend on H Street and then had a great time at the P&C pig roast.

Liz: National Gallery East (Edward Munch) + West (Chase collection of cool art I loved and had posters of  in College), bought old desk at flea market here (Mission oak), drank with girlfriends at Tunnicliffs under alias “Angela,” (made necessary by topic of conversation and eavesdropper) and enjoyed lovely neighborhood  pig roast at P and C Market. (Am here now-wow).

Jen: Low key Friday evening was noteworthy if only for the debut of a gluten-free pizza night. Pizza being a near sacramental food in our house, this was not a small deal. Let me just say I have my work cut out for me. Saturday we welcomed The World’s Best Grandparents who drove down from Jersey to surprise their grandson at his baseball playoff game.  We won’t speak of the score but I think some of those kids were older than 8. Had a really great dinner at Sticky Rice that evening. No joke. Sunday we showed the Grans the wolds of Suburban Virginia VA (!!) for a soccer playoff and then came home and experimented with a loaf of gluten-free bread to accompany a minstrone.

    Claudia,
which DMV did you go to and at what time? I need to make note of it for my next DMV trip to replace my ready to expire license.

  2. I went to the one in SW – 95 M Street. I initially went right when they opened but there was a huge line. When I came back an hour and a half later I only had to wait 15-20 for my number to be called, and then another 10 minutes or so to get my picture taken. Pretty painless considering some of my past visits.

I’ve actually had good luck at the SW DMV going on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons around 2:00 p.m. I think I was there 30 minutes max both times I went.

I read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo from cover to cover this weekend…. mostly in bed. Ran into my first Christmas display at Fresh Market in Annapolis and wasn’t really in the mood yet. Give me another month at least. Do like the baking thing, though.

Whatever you do, don’t go to the Georgetown DMV! Total nightmare.

I actually did indulge in a Gilmore Girls marathon this weekend! The first in a long time. And I discovered the Risotto Balls at Taylor Gourmet. If you haven’t had them, you need to try them!

  7. Jen says:

Mackenszie, GG + Taylor Rice balls…perfect match. Try their fried ravioli next…so good.
