greenHILLhome: Papurniture

Chairline by Papurniture

People can be very creative with recycling and reusing materials.  We know recycling is good for the environment, but it doesn’t have to be the old take-it-to-the-curb-once-a-week routine we generally associate with the action.  Some local artists have taken recycling and reusing to the next level, creating objects of art from everyday materials.

Dino Almaguer is a designer right in our neighborhood who has come up with a unique way to reuse paper: Papurniture.  His line of chairs, chaises, sofa, and tables are made of 100% recycled paper and do not use harmful resins or dyes.   A DC-area resident since childhood, Almaguer attended art classes while growing up and went on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design.  He created Papurniture as a way to mesh his creativity with his concern for the environment.  Dino has noted he hopes that his pieces represent sketches come to life, with bold colors and vivid curves.  Each piece is hand-made and hand-signed.

Almaguer recently showed some of his work at an art open house on the Hill at 610 Independence Avenue SE.  His pieces can also be found in private collections in four states.
