The Montessori Program at Watkins Elementary School in Capitol Hill is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this weekend. The program, which has been around since 1964, joined forces with the DC Public School system in 1990 and is now part of the Capitol Hill Cluster School.

At present, the program teaches over 170 children in the area focusing on learning through self-discovery and teamwork and includes classes for both Primary (ages 3-6) and Secondary (ages 6-9) students. In the future, the program hopes to expand to include students through 8th grade. In addition, the DC Public School system has announced that, due to demand, the program will move to its own location for the 2011/2012 school year to offer access to more families in the community.

In order to celebrate its 20 year anniversary and raise funds for the school, The Montessori Program will be hosting, “A Montessori Night’s Dream” this Saturday, June 12th from 6 to 9 pm in Eastern Market’s North Hall. The event will include an auction, live music by Jazz artists Janellle Gill, Kris Funn and John Lamkin, and food from local restaurants such as CAVA and le Pain Quotidien. Tickets will be on sale at the event, online, and at Frager’s Hardware for $15.
