Scorching. Blistering. Fry an egg on the sidewalk…are you sick of the heat talk yet? I am. Oh it was a super-hot one and no, actually, it wasn’t the humidity it was just bloody H.O.T.
How did the THIHers manage the heat?
Jon: I spent the better part of the weekend under the weather and indoors, but I managed to get out for a nice Father’s Day lunch on Sunday followed by the at-least-monthly trip to Frager’s for odds and ends.
Kyra: We tried our best to beat the heat by taking early walks and cooling off in our old-school kiddie pool. We are also accepting requests from strangers to join them poolside at any one of the private pools in the area. We’ll provide the sunscreen if you provide the water.
Claudia: Despite the Nationals losing on Friday, I enjoyed the game and a quiet night after a long week of work. On Saturday my roommates and I had a BBQ, and I defeated Nichole in flip cup despite her unconvincing trash talking. On Sunday I took my dad to brunch for Father’s Day and then escaped the heat by spending the day in the pool.
Nichole: Friday was an early night after a neighbor’s daughter’s birthday party. Saturday, Claudia hosted a very fun BBQ and defeated my team in flip cup. (I’m blaming age and my therefore deteriorating coordination.) Saturday night we had an excellent dinner at the Chesapeake Room followed by mojitos and the musical stylings of the White Ray Charles at Banana Cafe.
Sharee: We had one of the busiest kitchens on Capitol Hill this weekend – dinner for 8 on Friday and 4 on Saturday. Many delicious courses were created out of the fresh summer vegetables from our CSA (which happens to have a pick-up at a fellow THIHer’s house – thanks Robert!) and Eastern Market. We also introduced a friend to Ted’s Bulletin, which was a big hit. And, to wrap up the weekend, we watched the Nats play a great game against the White Sox on Sunday.
Robert: Spent the weekend touring 8th graders from Florida up and down the East Coast. Sunday afternoon was finally Father’s Day time, and we visited friends out in the VA burbs.
David: On Friday night, I had friends over to grill some steaks. On Saturday — for the first time — my girlfriend and I visited the Maine Avenue Fish Market on the Southwest Waterfront, where we bought some soft shell crabs. Took it easy on Sunday, spending some time with the tomatoes.
Liz: Fireflies, Family, rinse, repeat.
Tim: Watched the Nats waste $15 million in perfectly good pitching Friday night, then got a surprise camping trip with family and friends the next day. Great time had by all, with more progress made towards my own personal Cibola: actually sleeping at night in the woods.
Maria: We enjoyed the heat; getting a plot at the SEED garden; and eating at Park Café with a gorgeous view of the lightning bugs twinkling over Lincoln Park.
Tory: Spent time indoors to avoid the sweltering temps, cleaned and organized the basement. Finished the weekend with dinner at our neighbors’ house. A great weekend at home!
Kate: We spent Saturday hoping it would cool off and discovering our AC was broken. The highlight of Sunday was the kind MOTH-based donation of a window unit and celebration of impending coolness (if not a huge repair bill) with a dip at the Aquatic Center, meatball subs at the Prego and a tasty late dinner at Acqua al 2.
Jen: Celebrated the last day of school with Toy Story 3 and cried at the end. Saturday I tested a wedding cake recipe for my sister’s upcoming nuptials and that evening was at the Atlas for the opening weekend of movies and wished all movies could be made by the Muppets. Sunday was spent at a soccer tourney in Fairfax with some 8 year old Sports on the Hill All-Stars and took the opportunity to run errands between games and wondered if suburbanites know how easy they have it when it comes to a seemingly simple task like purchasing razors. A fellow Hill-based soccer mom thinks this just makes them soft. I’d be curious to hear our readers thoughts…
