UPDATE: The speaker for tonight’s Preservation Cafe is sick, so “Take Back Your Closets” has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 19.
Last Saturday I bid on a Container Store gift certificate and personal organization session at a silent auction. The Saturday before, I checked out storage options at Ikea. Next weekend I’m sorting for our spring yard sale. Like checking out the cherry blossoms, these are my annual spring rituals and while I love the details of my circa-1910 home, I would give my right arm to have more than 4 small closets. Damn those minimalists!
Jill Lawrence was thinking of me and every storage-challenged renter or homeowner out there when she developed this month’s Preservation Cafe topic “Take Back Your Closets.” At the Capitol Hill Restoration Society’s monthly talk tomorrow night, Wednesday, March 17, at Ebenezers Coffeehouse she’ll discuss ways to deal effectively with the piles, stacks, and clutter “overload” all too common in our homes. Jill is the Jill behind Jill of All Trades and has been helping organize Hill lives and closets since 1996.
She says many residents believe that commercial closet systems (such as the Container Store’s much-admired Elfa system) are the way to go, but real problem-solving for our space constraints involves a lot more than the cha-ching at the store. Such solutions are often not ergonomic and don’t fit the odd-shaped space so often found on the Hill, Jill says. She’ll address all of the things that keep us from our best organization intentions, and do some Show & Tell about her best space saving solutions. Jill confesses she’s a big fan of hangers…could she be talking about the Wonder Hangers that I’m one click away from trying?
The Preservation Cafe meets at Ebenezers Coffeehouse, 2nd & F Streets, NE, in the downstairs community room from 6:30-7:15 p.m. The event is free, accessible, and open to all in the Capitol Hill community; no reservations are needed.

Hi,
I’m Jill Lawrence, CPO-CD(R) of Jill-of-all-Trades — the speaker for the “Take Back your Closets” talk for the Capitol Hill Restoration Society. I have just returned from the doctors with my Tamiflu prescription! Unfortunately, I can’t deliver the talk tomorrow in my ill condition, so please mark your calendars for the new date for the closet-clutter-clearing and organizing presentation. May 19th is the new date — also a Wednesday from 6:30-7:15 at Ebenezer’s Cafe. I hope to see you there.
Sounds like an interesting event. I hope you get feeling better Jill.
