Roses are Red, Snow is White; On Valentine’s Day, Flowers are Just Right

Every Valentine’s Day, I wait until the last minute to purchase a card and gift for my husband. It’s not that I don’t love him. It’s not that I don’t want to express my love for him with gifts and cards that make my bank account shrink and Hallmark’s stock go up. It’s just that he is so hard to buy for, and I seem to spend of all my creativity and cash on Christmas gifts. And when it comes to Valentine’s Day cards, the only thing that seems to be left by the time I get to the store are the cards for wives and girlfriends—because, based on my unscientific observances over the past seven years, guys wait until the last minute to buy cards for their loved ones as well. Now, factor in the snow, and I suspect we will have a few spouses scrambling for last minute gifts as soon as we are released from our snow-covered prisons.

When the snow stops falling and you are feeling brave enough to navigate the city streets, visit one of the Hill’s many resources for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift: fresh-cut flowers.

Surroundings, Lincoln Park
Charles Hudman, a master florist with more than 30 years experience in floral design, makes Surroundings one of the premiere floral design services on the Hill. Hudman will create custom bouquets for customers looking to spend anywhere from $15 to $150. Fresh-cut, wrapped roses are also available for $49.

Blue Iris Flowers, Eastern Market
The flowers at Blue Iris Flowers brighten even the snowiest scene. If you are looking for a simple, fresh-cut wrapped bouquet featuring a variety of flowers from daisies to tiger lilies, stop by the market and pick up a bouquet for $12. Roses are available five for $9, or $27 for 15 roses.

Safeway, Kentucky Ave. SE
If you are looking for long-lasting flowers at a price that won’t break the bank, be sure to visit the floral department at Safeway. Wrapped bouquets of flowers start at $4.99, with a special Valentine’s Day bouquet selling for $9.99. On a typical day, a dozen wrapped roses at Safeway will cost you $9.99. In the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, expect prices to double to $19.99. Arranged roses cost $39.99.

What about the flower shop at 5th&H NE, Nouveau Fleur??? Debbie has always done well by me.

Thank you, sebastian. I didn’t know about the place at 5th and H. I’ll be sure to check them out soon.

Unfortunately, the snow affected how much research I could do for my post. I had planned on featuring many more options and instead went for one high, one mid-range and one low cost option.

LOVE Debbie at Nouveau Fleur (500 H St NE). She is really talented. She doesn’t stock a ton of flowers, but gets really nice ones and is an artist at arranging them.

I agree. Anyone nearby should try Nouveau Fleur. Debbie did the flowers for my superbowl party. They were a big hit! The arrangement was visually striking and fragrant. If you have a favorite vase, you can take it to her and she will do an arrangement in your vase.

Blue Iris is also a long time favorite for floral bouquets. Let’s support our local businesses!
