Kudos for Folger

During Monday evening’s Helen Hayes Awards, Folger Theater took home three awards recognizing its 2009-2010 season.  Founded in 1983, the awards recognize excellence in theater throughout the Washington, DC region.

Hamlet garnered awards both for Outstanding Resident Play and Graham Hamilton, in the title role, was recognized as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Resident Play.  (Having seen Jude Law as Hamlet on Broadway the prior winter I can say, in my amateur opinion, Folger did it better.)  The James MacArthur Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Resident Play went to Louis Butelli for his role in Henry VIII.  Folger received 19 nominations in all, including nods for Outstanding Resident Play to every production that season, which also included a new translation of Orestes, A Tragic Romp.

If you haven’t been to this neighborhood gem yet (or if its been a while), the final production of the season, Cyrano, opened this week and runs through June 5th.
