Tuesday Morning Circle Time

Hope you had a fabulous weekend celebrating the birth of this crazy little democracy of ours! Three day weekends are just so darn great. I wonder if Monday really enjoys letting loose once in a while and letting Tuesday take the brunt of the world’s angst for a change?

Sorry Tuesday!

Hey THIH, what did you do this holiday weekend?

Liz: watched a 360 degree panorama of firework displays from the hills, waterfronts and valleys all over the city and Maryland from a neighbors’ rooftops next door. It was the kids first fireworks, Venus was shining brightly in the night sky, all generations were gathered, young and old helped up on the ladder, and now they are going to be forever spoiled by anything less.

Maria: Took her older child to see Toy Story 3 and bawled like a baby because it was that sweet; was gladdened by the sight of a packed Barracks Row parade, took pictures and waved at old and new friends; and enjoyed all the amazing, legal and illegal fireworks around the area, while still taking pictures like a madwoman.

Jon:I had an eventful and patriotic weekend, starting with a trapeze lesson at TSNY DC on Saturday morning followed by a party in Stafford, VA on the edge of the Potomac Rivier.  Sunday we took in the Barracks Row July 4th Parade, followed by a visit to Eastern Market and a barbecue for about 20 friends and family.  We then all caravaned to the top deck of the Union Station parking lot (thanks to a MOTH rec) to take in an unobstructed view of the official and other fireworks displays.  Monday started with a visit to the National Building Museum to see the new LEGO exhibit (so cool), a birthday lunch for my wife at Zest, and a dinner over the river at Lebanese Taverna.  Now I just need another vacation day to recuperate.

Kyra: This weekend was about fear and how we overcome it. On Sunday, we traveled to Annapolis where we watched our 21-month-old daughter overcome her fear of water in a matter of hours. Inspired by my little girl, who at first wouldn’t let more than her feet touch the water but ended the day jumping into the pool and the arms of her da-da, we made our way back into the city to visit friends at 17th and Independence. The DIY displays were a bit too much for me–my fear of fire (however irrational it may be) forced us to drive home and watch from our living room window. I still hate fireworks, but I am learning to tolerate them for the sake of my husband and daughter. If Anabel can jump in the deep end of the pool then I can at least watch the city’s many displays, at least from my living room.

Nichole: I was “kidnapped” to Petworth for the weekend after a trip to the Maine Avenue fish market for crabs, shrimp and crawfish for an America Day low country boil.  The neighborhood fireworks that went on for hours were as good as those of many small town shows I’ve seen!

Scott: Was stuck at work for most of the holiday weekend, but did manage to get away from the office long enough to get to a friends for a 4th of July party downtown. We had an amazing rooftop view of the fireworks on the Mall, and Alexandria, and in PG County, on basically every street in the city, and on the rooftop itself. Happily only 4-5 people left without limbs…

Sharee: We left the Hill for cooler temperatures and breezes on the Eastern Shore.  There was bike riding, barbecuing, relaxing on the beach and fireworks over the Chester River.

Jen: It was a big birthday weekend, I hosted a several extra ten-year old boys for a sleepover on Friday to celebrate ten years of being someone’s Mom. Recovered on Saturday and then headed to the Atlas and watched La Dolce Vita for the first time and left really depressed and feeling a little bit tricked as I had been under the impression it was going to be all scooters and sunglasses and beautiful people…which it was but…ugh. Sunday went to the parade on Barrack’s Row, fell in love with our neighborhood again just a little bit and watched the fireworks from a friend’s rooftop deck in Southwest. We ended the weekend with a surprise picnic in Lincoln Park for the birthday of a dear friend.

Claudia: I kicked off my patriotic weekend by finally making it over to the Beirgarten Haus on H Street for beer with some friends — the beer wasn’t American but it was a fun evening and start to a long weekend.  On Saturday morning I celebrated niece and nephew’s second birthday with my family, and then spent the rest of the day relaxing by the pool until packing up a picnic to go see the rehearsal concert at the Capitol.  I continued the 4th of July festivities the next morning at the parade on 8th Street, followed by more pool time, and then enjoyed multiple fireworks shows from the roof of one of the House office buildings.  By Monday I was done with the heat and spent most of the day staying cool in my air conditioned house.

Tim: Enjoyed the Fourth down in North Carolina with my family. Kayaking, clamming, blowing shit up, all the usual vacation activities. if anything, it’s a little too cool down here. I almost had to dig out a sweatshirt last night. How’s the weather back in DC?

I didn’t mention the heat once! Maybe I’m getting used to it?

Readers, did you brave the Mall? March in the parade? We want to know!
