Monday Morning (Afternoon?) Circle Time

Here it is–the end of summer. Kids are back in school, temperatures are in the low 90s (as if it is a relief) and the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day, is only a week away. Where did it all go?

As we head into our last week of summer, The Hill is Home writers share what made their summer great.

Liz: Best thing we did–kill or push off the mosquitoes for a spell so we could enjoy the back yard. First we tried the garlic, non-toxic. The more toxic chrysanthemum worked wonders, considering this summer broke records for ‘squitoes as well as heat. We spent our first summer on A Street NE and loved growing cucumbers, meeting neighbors, running around in the back yard, and breaking in the porch swing.

Sharee: I spent the summer eating my way through every flavor of Dolci gelato at P&C Market — it was the perfect antidote to the heat. I also moved into office space at 13th & H Streets, NE and have enjoyed getting to know all my neighbors and fellow small business owners on that vibrant and fun block.

Jon: This was our first summer in our home, so we enjoyed the gradual evolution of a rough patch of land into a functional yard. It was fun to plant new plants and shrubs and have friends and family over to enjoy the yard. We of course took advantage of Hill establishments to help us in the process, including numerous trips to Frager’s and Ginkgo Gardens. The yard still has a ways to go, but the summer has been a lot more fun with outdoor space.

Nichole: I’d have to say the best thing about this summer has been spending time on the patios of the Hill. From the Argonaut to Tunnicliff’s to the Chesapeake Room to Mi Vecindad to my own patio and those of friends (and everywhere in between) I’ve had a great summer filled with good times on porches and patios.

Kate: More than anything, I’ve loved my time around Eastern Market this summer. The cool waters of the Rumsey Pool has become my mecca and I’ve enjoyed the water so much I can turn a blind eye to the dressing rooms. Cold ice coffees and mango smoothies from Port City, combined with visits to artist/vendor friends at the market and picking up tomatoes and peaches, have made me treasure our backyard treasures all the more.

Maria: One of my favorite things this summer was to just walk around, especially at night.  I loved taking pictures of food and people and the sky and fireworks, etcetera, while walking with my family.

Kyra: Our summers have been the same year after year. We take on a huge home improvement project, and, when not working on the house or just plain working, we spend our down time at the ballpark. This year we slowed down a bit and embraced our new life, which revolves around our daughter. This summer we focused on trips to the park, lunches at the Market, new friends and long afternoon naps. We didn’t quite give up our trips to the ballpark or our home improvement projects, they simply revolve around the whim of a soon-to-be two-year-old little girl.
