It’s the weekend before Halloween, so this is generally the time the grown ups get to have fun, be it at a neighbor’s Halloween party or something at one of our local watering holes.
Be sure to visit Backstage, as it is their last Halloween in the neighborhood. Next year, we’ll be trekking to the ‘burbs for mask and spirit gum. We have covered a lot of the Halloween related activities here already but there are a few more happening this weekend, so I’m including them today.
So what are we doing this weekend?
Tonight get yourself super creeped out at the H Street Playhouse. Scena Theatre is running A Clockwork Orange, yes it was a book and a movie but what about all that wackiness right here in front of you live? That should set the Halloween scene nicely. The show runs through November 18 and tickets are available on Sene’s website http://www.scenatheater.org/
Friday morning ditch the office and help the Anacostia at a river cleanup sponsored by Living Classrooms and the American Chemistry Council. The cleanup will be held near Kingman Island on Parking Lot 6 of RFK Stadium in Northeast, D.C. from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m followed by a picnic lunch, during which the organization will present its 2012 “Living Legend Award” to individuals with a vested interest and a record of diligent work in the Anacostia River watershed and community.

All weekend long the Hill Center if offering a pottery exhibition and sale by 15 nationally recognized potters. The work is described as functional art, so there will be dinner plates, mugs, platters, vases and pots. There are works both on display and for sale. Friday evening is an advanced showing and cocktail party. Admission to that event is $25 and tickets are available at the Hill Center’s website: http://hillcenterdc.org/home/pottery. Saturday and Sunday admission is free. It’s only Halloween, but I can see getting some holiday shopping started this weekend.
Saturday Frager’s Hardware is hosting a Halloween Spooktacular. Beginning at 10 a.m. there is pumpkin carving and painting, provided you have purchased your pumpkin at Frager’s. At 1 p.m., there will be a costume parade and some trick or treating. And, at 1:30 p.m. there is a pumpkin pie eating contest for five hungry contestants. Registration for the contest begins at 1 p.m., so get there early if you want a chance at pie-eating glory.
Saturday evening Special Consensus, a bluegrass band from Chicago will play at the Corner Store. If you are a bluegrass fan you should check them out. According to one review, “The vocals are spotless, the playing as shiny as a newly minted penny, and music like this is the reason people come to love bluegrass…” Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. http://cornerstorearts.org/
Sunday The Fridge bids farewell to two recent exhibits. The graffiti style of Asad “ULTRA” Walker and the provocative “packin heat and talk dirty” by Laura Elkins. The closing party begins at 2 p.m. but ULTRA will be on hand at 1 p.m. to discuss his work and influences.
