To Do

It always seems like the really fun stuff happens here when I leave town. Boo. Well while I’m in Jersey with the family this weekend please go and have some fun for me will you?

Tonight the Atlas is showing the classic film Some Like it Hot. Starring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two musicians who accidentally witness a mob hit. They hit the road to escape and hide out as members of an all-girl band, in drag of course because what’s funnier than cross dressing? A lot but still it’s a fantastic movie. With Marilyn Monroe as the breathy singer Sugar Kane. 8pm and tickets are $5. Food and drinks available at the cafe.

Friday night again is the Kung Fu Double Feature at Atlas. This week is the Five Deadly Venoms and The Kid With the Golden Arm. And I really wanted to see the Venom one, bummer. You’ll let me know how it was okay? Deadly Venoms is at 7:00 pm and kid is at 9:30. Tickets to one are $5 and for both they are $8. Sushi from Sticky Rice will be available and their famous tots will be given out to the first 15 people in the door that night.

Singer MaryAnn Price makes an appearance Friday night at the Corner Store. Price sang back up for Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks, The Kinks and Asleep At The Wheel and now leads her own jazz trio and is one half of the duo Ethyl and Methyl. Show starts at 8pm and tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Florida Avenue may be just beyond the borders of what we call the Hill but it sure is close for those of us on the Northeast side of the neighborhood. After Union Market opens we may very well want to claim it. The new market will feature artisinal food venders and is set to open in the fall. This Saturday from 12pm to 6pm get a taste of what to expect at the Summer Picnic Spectacular.  Tickets are $7 day of the event and $5 in advance, kids ten and under are free. The event will feature food by too many venders to count but they will include Red Apron Butcher, Chupacabra taco truck, Sticky Fingers bakery and a jillion more. Chefs such as Chef Scott Drewno of The Source, Chef Victor Albisu of Taco Bamba and Jeff Black of BlackSalt/Pearl Dive will also be selling some treats. There will be live performances by DC’s own beat boxing musical genius/gentleman Christylez Bacon and others. An 85 foot moonbounce will be on hand for the kids to bounce off all that sugar.  I’ve never seen such a thing so please take pictures for me will you?

Before or after the massive moonbounce bring the kiddos to the Atlas for Roald Dahl’s The Witches. This film,  starring Angelica Houston, tells the story of a young boy who stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse. The film is free are will be shown at 10am and 4pm.

The heat and or rain has forced Gallery O/H to cancel a few Music in the Courtyard Saturdays but they are determined this week’s Natty Beaux show will go on. This group, made up of a mix of WAMMIE award winners,  plays a mix of roots rock, zydeco, rockabilly and even klezmer and jazz.  Gates open at 7 and the show begins at 8pm Tickets are $10 and that gets you entry plus a drink ticket as well as discounts at Shawafel and Dangerously Delicious Pies.

Jen DeMayo is the Director of Community at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.
