To Do

I’m confused. Some people are referring to this weekend as the 4th of July Weekend while others say next weekend is the holiday. With the 4th being a Wednesday I find it hard to pick a side and so therefor I’m in town for both. Lucky me!

Well either way let’s find out what’s going on this weekend.

Tonight Bombadil takes the stage at the Red Palace. The band, described as “obtuse but melodic indie-folk-pop with a flair for the fantastic.” took a two-year hiatus due to bassist Daniel Michalek’s debilitating nerve injury is back on tour with a new album. Doors open at 8pm and the show is at 8:30.

Friday night at the Hill Center Jason  Henschen (aka “Sarong”) is giving a talk about his experience hiking the Continental Divide. For four and a half months he a two friends survived on the dehydrated food he had prepared for 6 moths before the start of their journey. The talk begins at 7 but come early because the bluegrass band Stick Mob will  be there to warm up the crowd. Concessions are available throughout the evening and there is a post-talk dessert reception. Free.

Saturday afternoon you might think about some self improvement. Perhaps a bit of education? Surely there are still things we all can learn about..um each other?? Regardless of where your preferences fall along the rainbow of human sexuality, chances are that if you prefer humans they are generally equipped with either a mysterious G or P spot.  One only one or the other. I think? I really should take this…The Garden, the sex-positive shop and resource center set to open on H Street soon, is hosting a workshop led by Ignacio Rivera. The workshop will be held at 4pm on the site of the future store, the second floor of 1322 H Street NE. Cost is $20 or $15 if you show your ticket to that evening’s benefit show at the Red Palace, The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Saturday night check out the new exhibit at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop by artist Jane Wynn. She works with a variety of media including assemblage, jewelry, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, painting, and photography. The opening reception in from 5pm to 7pm and is free. The exhibit will be on display until July 31

Sunday keep the self-improvement theme alive and take the Collage Workshop at The Fridge led by artist Tom Block. $10 will cover the cost of basic supplies but a lot needs to come from you. Bring small bits of paper from your life – grocery lists, to-do lists, scribbles, doodles or other normally forgotten pieces of a life well lived plus images developed from favorite things and activities (a sport, hobby, beloved person, special event etc.). Tom will show you how to use painting, printing, drawing and collage methods to produce an individualized work of art. The workshop runs from 2-4pm.
