Hill Buzz

I don’t know about you but the chill in the air and the orange-colored leaves are making me think about pumpkin pies, apple cider, and evenings by the fire.  Now if only the Redskins would start winning a few games, I could count this as one of the better falls in DC. Instead of lamenting yet another loss, let’s look back to other events from the last week.

  • DC Mud has the scoop on a grocery store and new apartments coming to H Street NE.
  • Remember when we told you about people keeping chickens in their back yardCity Desk has more on Tommy Wells’ efforts to change the legislation to allow the birds on the Hill.
  • Sunday’s shooting in NE and the carjacking at 12th and C Streets NE have neighbors concerned but seem to not be getting much attention in area blogs or news outlets.  So this is my reminder to you, dear readers, to be careful out there and report anything suspicious.
  • In case you missed it, you can hear JD Land on Monday’s Kojo Nnamdi Show here.
  • The Washington Business Journal recently reported that DC is a top spot for young adults.  The article quotes Barbara Lang of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce explaining, “New and revitalized neighborhoods are also putting D.C. on the map, Lang said, citing the U Street corridor and H Street NE corridor as magnets for the young and hip.”

Is there a list of the various neighborhood mailing lists somewhere? Police, community, etc? That would be really helpful for a Hill newbie, like myself!

    Thanks.

  2. Tommy Wells has a good list on his website: http://www.tommywells.org/component/option,com_weblinks/Itemid,23/

We have community websites listed to the left, but haven’t added the listserves. Not a bad idea though, so we may just have to add a section!

What exactly does it mean that H Street is “revitalized”? I hear that so often. The fact remains that I wouldn’t walk H Street at night, on any night, and I know that I am not alone. The recent early evening shooting only further convinces me that avoiding H Street altogether is the right move. I appreciate that progress that has been made in that area, and am all for progress, but too many people act as if it is right on the cusp of becoming Dupont.

  6. I agree that the hype is at times a bit much and teh corridor is far from becoming the next Dupont, but I do think it’s fair to say that it is *being* revitalized. No, it’s there yet, but because it truly has become a destination, it is a fair description of the neighborhood.

And yes, crime is still a big concern there – if I am by myself or with only another girl, I do get worried walking more than a block from my car to the bar or restaurant I am going to. But at the same time, I walk that block or two because I can’t find parking any closer…because that many people are coming to the area to eat, drink, and hear live music. That is, undeniably, a big change from a few years ago.

Once the streetcars are in place, H Street is going to be amazing. Thanks to Tommy Wells, the Mayor is now commited to getting them in sooner. http://hstreetgreatstreet.blogspot.com/2009/10/fenty-wells-streetcars-for-h-st-now.html
