After years of staking out blanket real estate at the Sculpture Garden’s Friday night concerts, we decided to kick off the weekend by rolling out our swath of green velour at the lovely, breezy, boardwalk-sporting Yards Park instead, grooving to the R&B tunes of Special Occasion. I felt compelled to pinch myself, it was such a perfect night; pinot gris; the sweet grooves of bands like the The OJs; dancing toddlers; and ladies doing the Electric Slide. All that was missing were the fireflies, and there they were waiting for me in the yard when we got home. This balmy joy doesn’t stick around, so let’s hear what folks have been doing to make the most of these fleeting no-AC days.
Jon: Our super exciting weekend started with a clogged tub drain that required a call to the plumber, and subsequent waiting around on Saturday afternoon for the plumber. We did manage to sneak in a visit to Eastern Market that morning though, and I found my new favorite market treat in a shrimp po’boy from Puddin Comfort Food. Sunday entailed mostly errands and chores around the house, but at dinner we got to enjoy some lettuce from our garden for the first time this season.
Jen: Friday night, Little league. Saturday, two Little League games and one 50th birthday lunch. Sunday, the kitchen ceiling collapsed (due to bathroom construction above) so we spent the day cleaning that while assisting the creation of two Vocabulary Fashion show costumes. Ended with a lovely dinner with my mother-in-law at the H Street Country Club.
Nichole: I had friends in town from New York this weekend (one of whom had never been to DC; the other hadn’t been here in 8 years) so we started the weekend at the Argonaut on Friday. Saturday morning I had a marathon Theater Alliance board meeting at the Atlas, so sent my friends on their happy way to explore the city. After they enjoyed the sights and dinner at Matchbox (and I gave the dogs haircuts and went to Home Depot) we finished Saturday with wine on the patio. We started Sunday with coffee at Peregrine, a stroll through the Market, brunch at Tunnicliffs; and then I made my once-every-5-years-or-so trip to the Air & Space Museum– I’m sorry… I still think it’s boring– and the American History Museum, which a visiting friend from France once called A Museum of Nonsense, but which I enjoyed today; and wound up the weekend bbqing with neighbors from both sides of the Anacostia. Speaking of which, at this bbq I was horrified to learn that raw sewage is still dumped into the Anacostia river on a regular basis. If this is not okay with you, read about what you can do to help at http://www.anacostiaws.org/.
Maria: Friday was kicked off by catching “Midnight in Paris”, which was really, really, really, really good, and all kinds of other positive adjectives. Afterward, indulged the sweet tooth over at Hello Cupcake with the kiddos (free cupcake soon…. mwahahahah!) Saturday we headed over to the quaintness that is Del Ray for a walk down the Avenue, Mexican food, a couple of incidentals, and antique store browsing. Afterward, ran to the UnSafeway for basic necessities so I could be ready for actually cooking breakfast at home for the first time in a while. On Sunday, we were overjoyed to discover we didn’t have to go check out any more open houses for a long time and brunched and lingered and stayed in until the late afternoon. Some of us consumed nearly their body weight in scrambled eggs. Gardened for a bit at the community plot (goodnight, sweet cilantro prince…) and
then went for a sanity walk. A good weekend was had by all.
Lauren: Friday I did a bunch of errands and was again disappointed with the Hill’s options for a good manicure: someone please set me on the right path! Saturday night we celebrated our engagement with out of town family and friends at a party on the roof deck at Cava. Sunday we enjoyed the weather; had friends over for brunch; and later had dinner at Matchbox and toured the monuments with some of the out-of-towners.
Angelique: We started our weekend with dinner at the Argonaut on Friday. On Saturday took the kids picnicking in Lincoln Park where they found a giant dirt pile and proceed to become covered in it. Yesterday, we headed to Homestead Farms where we picked our weight in strawberries.

@kate, what is the yards’ policy on alcohol? the sign said it’s not permitted, but we would have loved some vino while there sat. night. is it something you did illicitly?
@lauren, what is wrong with tammy nail? i like them and they are cheap!
had pizza on sat. night at 7th hill…don’t know why we dont’ go more often. love the laid back vibe and the kid-friendliness.
@lauren, I’m a big fan of Eastern Market nails, right across from the market building. I highly recommend making an appointment. I’ve had a mani, pedi, and eyebrow waxing there and was really happy with the results. Reminded me I need to schedule an appointment this week…
Oooh, my mistake, I meant Trader Joe’s Pinot Gris Salami. You have to try it! Actually, there were beers being sold to the crowd, which was odd considering the “beer and sangria garden” was a roped off. What strikes me as really odd is that the beer was being sold by Mei N U of Georgetown.
And I just looked through the Yards site and concert flyer and didn’t see anything about a policy.

Thanks for the suggestions! Neither of your suggested locations was where I received the aforementioned bad manicure on Friday. I haven’t ever tried Eastern Market nails so I will give that a go!! Thanks!
