With a name like “Kyra” and a knack for being silly, it’s not surprising that the kids in my first grade class were quick to call me weird. While I’ve always embraced my off-beat ways, it’s never been easy to find like-minded goofballs in this serious city we call home. Well, that is until I met the people at The Hill is Home. And while not all THIH writers are quite as silly or weird as I, they are an interesting mix of quirky personalities who are always a lot of fun to hang out with. Here’s what the crazy kids at the Hill is Home did this weekend—
Sharee: I started the weekend by recovering some stolen property. I found my bike, which had been taken from the Eastern Market metro earlier this summer, locked up in front of Port City Java on Friday. Two very nice MPD officers came to my aid and helped me get it home. Then, inspired by one of Maria’s Market Meals posts, we picked up some things from Canales and my hubby spent all day Saturday tending them in the smoker. Finally, we wrapped up the weekend with a great afternoon at Biergarten Haus.
Jon: Had a productive weekend of errands, cleaning up the house, and a little redecorating of the master bedroom. I enjoyed dinner Friday night at the new Red Rocks Pizza in Old Town, Saturday at Taylor Gourmet, and Sunday at home thanks to Dangerously Delicious. Oh yeah, and had a great brunch with fellow THIH bloggers at Biergarten Haus on Sunday.
Liz: Returned from vacation, alas, and stopped in directly upon return from the beach at Maury ES during the tail end of Beautification Day. New teachers, new paint, new school year. Loved Biergarten for THIH Brunch, and finished daylight hours of weekend by prepping mac and cheese, a special request breakfast for first day of school by the first-grader. Goodbye soft-serve, fries from the boardwalk and flip-flops. Hello jeggings, apple and pumpkin dishes, and creative ways to stuff and cut sandwiches for the kiddie lunchboxes. It is far too soon to see you!
Nichole: Sticky Rice, Rock n’ Roll Hotel, Grape + Bean, Columbia Firehouse, Chadwick’s, Rustico, Cap Lounge, Biergarten Haus. Anyone want to lend me their liver?
Claudia: I caught up with some friends at Jazz in the Garden on Friday night, then spent Saturday at Eastern Market and walking around the neighborhood, and then met a friend at the Capitol Lounge to watch the Skins game…losses in the pre-season mean we’ll do better in the regular season, right? Please? Sunday I had brunch at the Biergarten Haus, and then cooked some (hopefully) yummy meals for the week using the veggies from my first CSA delivery.
Robert: Kid’s birthday party, shopping for the new bathroom, and pub tour on Saturday, Biergarten Haus on Sunday.
Maria: Fortified myself and the family with a great breakfast at the Capital City Diner; went to Beautification Day at my son’s new school; bought supplies with the hipsters at the Columbia Heights Target; enjoyed the muggy weather from indoors; and had a beerful, lovely time with the THIHers at Biergarten Haus.
David: Spent Saturday exploring Montreal, which mainly consisted of eating my way through the city. After dinner, my girlfriend and I wondered why Green Day was blasting so loudly in the city streets — only to soon realize they were playing at an outdoor venue just four blocks from the restaurant we ate at, so we managed to catch the last ten songs of the show. Sunday was spent in the car — downpours turned what should have been a ten hour drive into nearly 15 hours behind the wheel.
Kyra: I practiced what I preach—in my bi-weekly Hill Homes posts—and refreshed my living room with two coats of paint. Good bye, lavender. Hello Jasper Opal with a touch of Mascarpone.

That’s awesome, Sharee! I only wish I’d enjoyed the fruit of your labors ;o) (maybe next time….)
