Weekend Chore: Get your leaves ready for pickup

It’s raking time again. Rake, check! Gloves, check! Advil, check!

Now that they’ve been drenched with icy rain, sidewalk leaves will be that much more fun to rake up, but rake we must! DC Department of Public Works (DPW) recently sent out their yearly booklet about leaf collection schedule.

We’re a little late on getting this news out so parts of Zone 6 have already had their Ward 6 leaves collected. Check out the map here to find out when the leaf collectors will hit your street. In short, many of us should be raking on the next few Sunday afternoons. We have a hold-out enormous oak tree in front of our house. Never fear, there’s a second wave of leaf collections in December. DPW provides a tool to track the progress of leaf collection throughout the city.

Please – leaves only! Tree limbs, bricks, dirt, rocks, etc., will damage the equipment and delay collections.

If you see the DPW raking teams out there raking, blowing, etc., please let them know their elbow grease is appreciated. Leaf-free sidewalks are certainly preferable to slipping and tripping through the winter months.

We’ll keep you posted about post-holiday tree pickup!
