ANC:

Meet the Candidates: Ellen Opper-Weiner, ANC 6B05

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

unnamed-2I am running for the ANC because I believe that my background and knowledge of the community will be helpful as ANC 6B makes important decisions for our neighborhood. I have lived in my Single Member District for 36 years and raised my 3 children here.

Our neighborhood is undergoing rapid and extensive change. Amid this change, I want the ANC to ensure there are meaningful opportunities for public discussion about major development projects, public safety, zoning, and noise issues, and that the process is open and transparent. Your ANC Commissioner should also work to ensure the delivery of basic city services, such as alley repair, trash and recycling collection, etc. That is a lot of work, but I know that I can do it.

Let me tell you why: 1) I listen and value the opinions of everyone. I believe we can resolve and find compromise on difficult issues by listening attentively and respectfully to each other; 2) I have shown that I am a problem solver through my work on many community-oriented projects, including Eastern Market, Boys Town, and the Alcohol Beverage Control Board; and 3) I am fair and effective, which I have demonstrated in my professional and personal life.

We have a lot of work to do to make sure that Capitol Hill is not overrun with non-sustainable development. Neighborhood-serving retail and small businesses are rapidly disappearing. Affordable housing is less available for seniors and young families who want to live here. This fact threatens the long-standing diversity in our community.

Our neighborhood needs a strong voice and advocate for what we believe is best for our community. I believe that I am that person. I hope you will vote for me on November 4th. In the meantime, please contact me atellenow4anc@gmail.com, on Facebook or Twitter #Ellenow4anc. I look forward to working on your behalf.
