We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home. These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.
At the urging of many neighbors and friends, I am running for ANC06B-05 Commissioner. Our neighborhood offers residents a unique home that must be valued and protected. I believe that first duty of any elected official is to listen to his/her constituents and represent their views. I am running for ANC Commissioner to ensure that the ANC actively promotes smart growth, always involves residents on key issues, and always acts in an open and transparent environment.
Why me?
- I know the neighborhood and I’m involved! My family and I have lived on the 300 block of 9th Street SE for over 33 years. Our three children –Jenny, Carl, and Kevin — grew up in the neighborhood, graduated from neighborhood DC public schools, and were active participants in the wide mix of activities ongoing year round. I just completed my term as an appointee to the Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT), providing advice and direction to the DCPS Capitol Hill Cluster schools. For the 17th consecutive year, I am again this year organizing our annual 9th St. SE block party.
- I know the issues! I’m the co-chair of Eastern Market Metro Community Association (EMMCA), facilitating the involvement and comments on local issues affecting our neighborhood such as the development of Hine Junior High, the design of the Eastern Market metro plaza, and public safety.
- I have the skills! My background and experience are ideal for that of an ANC commissioner. I was appointed to serve on DC’s Green Building Advisory Council, providing oversight and advice to DC Department of Environment implementation of DC’s green building code. During my 38 years at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), I worked with local government and communities to implement environmental regulations. Success came through local, tailored solutions derived through negotiation and training sessions similar to the ANC decision process.
- I have the right personality! I love to listen, observe, and “put myself in “other people’s shoes” before settling on a position. I know success with the ANC means working toward resolving issues, not taking stands that paralyze processes. One commissioner does not make a majority!
I’d like to meet all of you between now and the November 4th election to discuss neighborhood issues important to you. If I haven’t spoken to you yet, I look forward to the opportunity to talk with you in person. Shoot me an email at REEVERTSforANC6B@gmail.com or call me at 202 441 2282.
