To Do

fleelThings really do sloooooooow down across much of the world at the end of August, and Capitol Hill is no different. But, on Capitol Hill you can still run with the dead, catch art films and see rising stars in the theater world.

The must-do activity of the weekend is definitely the Flee the British 5K on Sunday at Congressional Cemetery, starting at 8 a.m. The historic 5K commemorates the 200th anniversary of the burning of Washington and will take runners amongst the graves of many key players of the War of 1812. There’s a 2k run for kids just after the 5k starts. Registration is $40 for the 5k and $10 for kids.

The Hill Center, together with DC Public Library, hosts an ongoing silent film series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. This week they’ll be showing “All Night” with Rudolph Valentino. It’s a racy plot: a married society couple persuade an unmarried pair to take their places at a party while they pretend to be the servants.

The concert at The Yards on Friday night features Cazhmiere, a variety party band. Make sure you’re early to grab a good spot on the lawn. The concert starts at 6:30 p.m..

Have the kids in your charge Saturday morning? Get $6 tickets to a cartoon that will keep your attention as well as theirs — and scores you free coffee!– at the Angelika Popup at Union Market. There’s a viewing of “My Neighbor Totoro” at 11 a.m. One of the most endearing and internationally renowned films of all time, “My Neighbor Totoro” is a deceptively simple tale of two girls who move to a new house in the countryside.

If you feel like attending a live show, you’ve got lots of choices at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The theatre has already opened two plays this month, and the third, “Molly”, opens Saturday at 3 p.m. The play, by Georgetown Professor Emeritus George O’Brien, explores the revelations of the young mistress of J.M. Synge — esteemed playwright of the Irish Literary Renaissance. See the schedule for “Molly” as well as “Shining City” and “She Kills Monsters” here.

Happy weekend, all!
