Legendary Lee Konitz appears with Brad Linde at the Atlas Friday as part of DC Jazz Festival.

Today’s potential derecho-like storm may just cancel all of the items listed below, but what the heck,  let’s proceed as if all is well. And, let’s hope that these events go on because several of them are Frager’s fundraisers.

Tonight kicks off the voting season for the Hilly Awards. Our local chamber of commerce CHAMPS is hosting a cocktail party on the beautiful roof deck of the heritage Foundation, and all are invited. There is an indoor location should the heavens open up. Stop by for drinks and appetizers and mingle with your favorite Hill businesses and friends. Tickets are still available here.

Local artist Fawna Xiao opens an exhibit at tabula rasa, 731 8th Street, SE. The exhibit, titled Constructs, is an exploration of natural formations and their geometry. The artist presents a series of screen-printed monotypes that pull between abstraction and representation in both the natural world and the imaginary one. The prints are portraits of geological landforms and their parts: ice glaciers and crystals, mountain ranges and boulders. Some are mysteriously unrecognizable, known as pure abstractions. Xiao’s work is delicately spontaneous and decisively minimalist as it carefully traces a mountain’s morning light or a crystal’s contour. The opening reception is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the exhibit runs through June 21st.

Friday night head back to tabula rasa. Though still a relatively new business, this pretty event space has quickly become a part of the community, and they would like to give back.  The art space wants to celebrate new beginnings with a Frager’s Fundraiser. All the proceeds go directly to the rebuilding of our beloved hardware shop. The proceeds support Frager’s and the surrounding business that were affected. Drinks and light appetizers add to the cheer. Bartending services will be provided by DCanter. The event begins at 6:30. You can purchase tickets here and donate to the raffle, by emailing: simmy@thetabularasa.com

DC Jazz Festival heads to the Atlas for a performance by the legendary Lee Konitz who appears with the Brad Linde Expanded Ensemble, featuring Matt Wilson and Florian Weber. They will be performing a 17-piece big band tribute to Lennie Tristano. Arrangements by Michael Abene were commissioned for the WDR Big Band and premiered in March 2012. This will be the first U.S. performance of the music. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25/$15 students. Get them here.

Saturday little ones can make a present for Dad at Little Loft (Sunday is Father’s Day by the way).  Father’s Day workshop choices: decorate a treasure box and fill with pirate loot (or small rocks) or design a tool belt for helping out around the house.  Perfect for backyard explorers, collectors,  and household assistants!  Dads and/or moms are welcome. Workshop is for ages 3-8 and runs from 10 a,m, to 11:15 a.m. The cost is $20 per child and 25 percent of the proceeds go to the Capitol Hill Community Foundation’s Fragers’ Fund. Register here.

The mayor’s One City Summer Initiative will kick off at RFK Stadium with a Truck Touch. This popular Department of Public Works event will be held  in parking lots 6 & 7.  Kids are invited to climb in DC Government agency trucks, helicopters, and vehicles and learn about the work these agencies do for the residents of the city. Truck Touch runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and the Summer Kick-off will run through 5 p.m. The Summer Kick-off is catered more towards teens and school-age kids to help them learn about all the resources, services, and opportunities that exist in the city during the summer. There will be youth performances and bands, a basketball tournament, and food.

Saturday night head to Gallery O on H, 1356 H Street NE, for free Jazz in the ‘Hood, as part of DC Jazzfest. The performers are  by Deaf Dog & the Indictments Dupont Brass, Phil Wiggins, and Ian Walters with the Swampkeepers.

On Sunday take dad to Capitol Hill Books for free root beer.  Thunder Beast will be having a free tasting event in front of the bookstore.  This is a great opportunity to taste some craft brewed Root Beer and browse the stacks.

Monday kick off “Pollinator Week” with a film screening and discussion about bees. The Center for Food Safety and Beyond Pesticides are hosting a film screening of Vanishing of the Bees and there’s a post-screening discussion with director Maryam Henein. Find out the latest on the mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder and if we all need to put up hives in our yards to keep these essential critters from disappearing.
