George, the 20-foot evergreen tree, in the park in the northwest quadrant of the Eastern Market Metro plaza, will festively be “brought to life” on Saturday, December 1st at 5:30 p.m. This will be the sixth year George, with his red and gold ornaments, will be lit in honor of George Didden III The event, other than supplying good cheer, will feature hot chocolate, coffee and donuts. Professional voices, The Joyous Voices, will lead those of us who are mere amateurs, in carols.
George Didden was the founding president of the Capitol Hill Business Improvement District. The BID is responsible for events such as the Barracks Row Fall Festival and the 4th of July Parade. The organization is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit funded through an assessment on commercial property owners. Their primary goal is to making the southeast area around Eastern Market clean and safe. Their mission is to provide security, street cleaning, maintenance and graffiti removal, streetscape improvements, marketing and promotional services and community outreach.
Kathy Didden, late wife of Mr. Didden, will flip the switch — and let the merriment begin!
Is that Saturday December 1, or Sunday December 2?
