To Do

Compagnie KLP performs at the Atlas tonight

Hard to believe, but Memorial Day weekend if upon us. It is scary how quickly this happened. Weren’t we just here?? Well, if your weekend plans do not include escaping town for the beach, let us assist with making it memorable.

Tonight the Alliance Française’s week-long salute to French hip hop comes to the Atlas Performing Arts Center with Tour of Duty by Compagnie KLP.  The French long ago took the vocabulary of hip hop and began exploring where it could go as an art form. This piece examines the origins of hip hop in a land far, far away called Brooklyn. Tickets are $23, $18 for Alliance members and can be purchased here. Curtain is at 8pm.

The never-ending presidential race is in full swing and the President is fighting to keep his job. Friday night the Hill Center is screening a documentary called “Bigger Than the Beatles” about his historic inauguration in 2009. The film focuses on two groups of high school students, one if which is the marching band from Dunbar High School here in DC. The screening is FREE  and begins at 7pm,  so register here.

Over at The Corner Store The Honeydew Drops will be playing a high lonesome sound that will take right back to your college days in the Blue Ridge. Well… okay maybe you didn’t go to a State school in the Commonwealth like some of us, but you can still enjoy the sweet sounds of this band. The show starts at 8pm and the suggested donation is $20 if you reserve ahead and $25 at the door.

Remember the 90s when it seemed like all the cool kids made zines? Well those self-published mini-magazines never went away and Washington is getting ready to celebrate the 2nd annual DC Zinefest. The Zinefest folks are hosting an event at The Fridge on Friday night from 8pm -11pm. Admission is $5 and you will be treated to a library of independent comics and zines as well as readings. Stay tuned for the main event in July.

On Saturday morning take an introductory tour of Congressional Cemetery. There is no charge for these docent-led excursions and no registration either. Just show up at 11am at the chapel but please leave your furry friends at home. The cemetery will be closed to dogs from 10:30 am until 3pm every Saturday and Sunday.

That afternoon head over to The Fridge to learn the art of screen printing t-shirts. The artist  UNJUANTED will be on hand to teach you skills of this art form. Bring your own tee or buy one there for $5.  The workshop is from 3pm 6pm and a $10 donation is requested to cover the cost of supplies. Stick around for Latino Poetry night from 7pm to 9pm featuring three poets who “bring distinct perspectives to the stage using performance, humor and social commentary. Maritza will bring an Afro-Latino-female voice, Sami will bring the poet/painter-spectrum viewpoint and Quique will bring his sarcastic, blunt and hilarious outlook.”
