This weekend is the last dull weekend before the rolling wave of holiday merriment begins. The season really stretches from Halloween until Three Kings Day. It might be a good time to get laundry done, watch the World Series or catch up on your DVR list and sleep, for soon schedules will fill with fun and commitments and sugar and booze.
But if you don’t want to stay home may I suggest some ways to indulge in some culture here in the neighborhood.
Friday you can check out the two plays getting rave reviews at the Atlas, Rorshach Theatre’s after the quake and Theatre of the First Amendment’s Can’t Scare Me: The Story of Mother Jones. Tickets for both shows are available on the Atlas website or at the box office, 202-399-7993 ext 2.
Saturday bring the kids to CHAW for the free performance offered as part of the Kids Euro festival. “Off to Lapland” features puppeteer Juha from Finland who takes the audience to Finnish Lapland. Mean trolls and Yoik music so what’s not to like? I must confess that I’m married to a Finn and I have never heard of Yoik music so I’m intrigued. Admission is free and open to all ages. Performances are at 10:00 and 11:30. For more information, please call (202) 547-6839 or visitwww.chaw.org.
Later on in the day CHAW is sponsoring a community drumming circle from 4:00-5:30. Explore improvisation, call and response, share rhythms and dance if you feel like it. Additional drums and percussion instruments will be available. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. If you go PLEASE report back in for Circle Time on Monday. I’m looking at you fellow THIHers.
Sunday expand your artistic horizons and indulge your nosy side too. Opera Lafayette is a company that frequently performs at the Atlas and the Kennedy Center. Sunday, October 23rd they are doing a performance from 3:00—4:30 p.m in the now open Hill Center. The performance is 17th-century French and Italian opera excerpts by Lully, Lambert, Vittori, Melani, Cavalli and Monteverdi. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for accompanying students (up to age 18) The free tickets are not available online and must be reserved by calling Opera Lafayette at (202) 546-9332 or at www.operalafayette.org. If you have been waiting to get a peak at the new Hill center now is your chance!
