Schedule for Upcoming Rumsey Pool Closure Still Uncertain

uploaded to Flickr by Randy Pertiet

It does strike me as odd that despite Memorial Day being the kick-off to all things summer, especially this brutal weather, DC swimming pools were closed on Monday, and shuttered again on Tuesday for a fulough day. The good news is that Rumsey Aquatic Center will be opened through July, at very least.

Yes, that’s right. The pool closure rumor is true, but delayed. DCPR is still in the procurement process for the contract for the capital improvements so the schedule is subject to change, but currently there are plans to close the Rumsey in August and September. Sadly, the improvements aren’t the least bit sexy; they include new storefront glass for the entrance, new lighting above the pools, replacing pumps, painting and resurfacing the parking lot.

Why has this work been scheduled for the height of the summer when the pool has it’s highest daytime use? Maybe that’s a question to try out with the DCPR Ask the Director widget. I’ve asked it through more traditional channels; I’ll let you know what I hear back.

This is terrible news. Especially for us Hill-ers doing the Nations Tri… Great. Looks like some long and out of the way trips to Wilson are on my horizon.

  2. @MJ, try Haines Point. It’s almost never crowded, heated and thus open into October, and its got beautiful views of the city while you’re doing laps.

It seems it’s just been a few years since the last big shutdown for rehab.

Rumsey’s been having some problems lately. DCPR says they weren’t able to hire enough lifeguards this summer (??) so Rumsey ends up very short-staffed on the weekends and they have to turn people away due to hitting capacity of swimmers per lifeguards. Between that and the serious theft issues at Takoma Park pool, it’s been a disappointing spring for us swimmers.

renovations at rumsey happen to often. wish they would do it once and for all and do it right!

It’s wild how low my expectations are at Rumsey. I’m always thrilled when I see shower curtains in the women’s changing room. Soap in the dispenser is like hitting the lottery. My expectations are incredibly low in the summer.
