Monday Morning Circle Time

Good morning, hope you had a swell weekend. The summer is really here now. Code orange warnings, summer blockbusters and skimpy clothing everywhere.

Speaking of skimpy clothing, this weekend was of course Pride weekend, celebrating the LGBT community. Lots of rainbow events all over town, and according to my Facebook feed, around the country.

We didn’t attend any events but on Saturday my eight year old ran into a kid from his baseball team. The kid told him he wouldn’t be at their game later that day because he was going to a gay parade. Or that’s how my son put it.

The thing that struck me about that exchange and the retelling of it was just how normal it seemed to both kids. No weirdness or judgement. It was just another fun event in the city. The everyday-ness of it was monumental to me.

So what were you all up to this weekend?

Jon: Saturday morning was spent at the National Zoo with the family, where we enjoyed watching all the lion cubs play and ducked into several air- conditioned buildings.  I spent part of the afternoon at the THIH first (annual?) bake sale, and Saturday evening at a housewarming party for a coworker.  Sunday included chores around the house including some yard work, but ended with a delicious trip to Lebanese Taverna Market in Arlington for dinner items.

Angelique: Friday night was spent recovering from volunteering at my kid’s Field Day at school. Saturday I hung out at the THIH Bake Sale booth and sold some goodies, and that night we went to the DC Pride Parade and then had dinner and drinks with some friends. Sunday was picnic at Lincoln Park, and then a rare afternoon where the whole house napped.

Kate: On Friday I was cheered by the helpfulness of the crew at the Hill Center as they hoisted the loaner tent into my car. The tent kept THIHers and our goodies from melting at the bakesale as we raised money for the Capitol Hill Community Foundation Saturday morning. Sadly, a large part of my zucchini bread was packed up for home but I’m optimistic it was enjoyed by the needy diners at St. Mark’s Grate Patrol program. After a Saturday of lolling about in the AC, we had marvelous 7th Hill pizza. Sunday took us to a great brunch at Cassatt’s in North Arlington and back home for beers by the baby pool in the mosquito-free back yard. Yay to Liz for mentioning Mosquito Busters!

Jen: Put an end to a crappystressybusy week on Friday with afternoon yoga at Bikram while my dear friend took my kids to the park. That evening I put some gluten free raspberry bars in the oven and  fell asleep, didn’t hear the timer and they burned into an impressive brick.  Saturday morning I opened the Atlas for the bakers from H Street Bakes, ran home to make more bars, ran them to The Hill is Home’s bake sale, picked up one kid from a birthday party, went to two Little League games, dropped kids at a sleepover and collapsed.  Sunday I learned the hard way that there is actually not a 7am Bikram class on Sundays. Later we went to the Cap Lounge for a late brunch of migas and then I crashed into a lounge chair at Cheverly pool.

Claudia: On Friday night I did lots of baking and enjoyed a lovely dinner at Montmartre.  Saturday morning I ran the National Press Club’s Beat the Deadline 5K, sold sugary treats at our bake sale, went to a yoga workshop at Capitol Hill Yoga, then met some friends in Virginia to feast on steamed crabs.  Mmmm.  Sunday morning I went to an early brunch at Senart’s, then drove to Baltimore for a bridal shower, and came home to cook a week’s worth of meals from my CSA box.
