The To Do List

Summer officially starts on Monday. But with temps in the 90s and what seems like 100% humidity this week, I’d say summer in DC is in full swing already. There’s some great things to do on the Hill this weekend if you’re around. Take a peek…

Thursday

Stephen T. Ayers, the newly confirmed Architect of the Capitol, will be the guest speaker at the Capitol Hill Restoration Society’s June Membership Meeting. Mr. Ayers will discuss the enormous success of the U. S. Capitol Visitor Center, progress on the tunnels, and other projects by the AOC office that impact the Capitol Hill community. (open to non-members). Reception starts at 7:00 pm, remarks at 7:30 pm.  St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 313 2nd Street, SE.

If art is more your thing, head over to H Street for ARTventures on H Street.  From 5:00 – 7:30 p.m., twelve different galleries and art spaces along the H Street Corridor will open their doors to the Capitol Hill community for a special neighborhood art walk. Participants will each be given an ARTventures “passport,” to be stamped at each stop on the art walk.

Friday

Looking for a place for a quick bite? Justin’s Café was just approved for outdoor seating — starting today! If you are looking for an excuse to head down to the Capitol Riverfront, Justin’s Café is it. Lunch, dinner, drinks…open at 11:30 am, sneak out of work early and chill outside to start the weekend off right.

Saturday

At Studio H on Saturday, well-known aerosol artist Tim Conlon’s “Derailed” exhibition opens at 6:00 pm. To give you an idea of what you might expect, Tim said, “I discovered freight train graffiti as a college kid in Baltimore just as the scene was emerging. As one of the biggest port cities on the East Coast, commercial cargo regularly arrived on large ships in Baltimore Harbor and was transferred to freight trains headed toward big cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. As a result, train cars were everywhere and as a young artist with a thing for graffiti, it was easy to get hooked on this constantly revolving art gallery. In Derailed, I pay respect to the rolling stock and the craft.”

Looking for some live entertainment after a long day of lounging poolside? Local band Memphis 59 is on tour, and stopping by The 18th Amendment on Saturday at 9:00 pm. Their style is described as “a combination of rock, alt-country, and pop.” And with no cover, why not by the band a drink?

Sunday

This Sunday is the final performance for the Lesbian & Gay Chorus of Washington.  After 26 years, the Chorus has decided to take an indefinite break due to “decreasing membership, revenue and resources.” Sunday’s concert, “Our Love Song to You — Our Farewell Concert,” is at 4:00 pm at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church.  Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  For more information, visit www.lgcw.org.

And while you’re out and about…

The DC Preservation League is sponsoring a project this summer with Carol Highsmith Photography to document the best of historic DC in the 21st Century. Do you have a favorite building, site or streetscape that speaks to the historic character of our city? Take a detour during your weekend chores this weekend and snap a picture of your favorite place on the Hill and share it on their Facebook page.

Where will you be this weekend? Share your weekend plans with The Hill is Home! Maybe we’ll run into you, neighbor.
