Now that you have your brunch and dinner reservations, here are a few additional suggestions for brightening up mom’s day with a memorable gift from one of our local purveyors.
Morsels of delicious chocolate are always a favorite! You can get a beautifully-wrapped box of delicious goodies handmade in Maine at Forecast, 218 7th Street, SE. Or you can swing by Groovy DC, where they will also have chocolates and flowers –as well as awesome cards– in time for Mother’s Day.
Oenology one of mom’s hobbies? P&C Market is one of the neighborhood gems that carries a small but wonderfully curated selection of wines. For Mother’s Day they’re also offering 20% off Mariage Frere teas and buy two get one free for all Michel Cluizel chocolate (in case you hadn’t had your fill). Maybe while you’re there you can pick up one of their sandwiches, some creamy cheese and a pint of Trickling Springs ice cream to make it a picnic!
Tricoter is French for knitting. Crochet is French too, but it means “hook.” You can see why we use one French term but not the other. Whichever of the two mom may do –or perhaps she does both– you may want to run, not walk, to Stitch DC and get her some awesome yarn or a logo bag. Or maybe she’d like to take classes and take up a new hobby? Then make sure you check the class schedule at Stitch DC’s website and offer to take the kids while she makes something beautiful (or just rips out stitches all night).
Hair and Nails and other sundry treatments are a great way to show mom you care. Why not pick up a gift certificate for her at any of the Hill’s many nail and hair salons? You can choose the one that is closest to you, from Eastern Market Nails, to Serendipity Salon, Randolph Cree, Capitol Nail Salon, Bubbles Salon (at two locations, no less!) Tammy’s Nails, Bebe Nails (now called Angelom Nails, apparently)– there are many great offerings on the Hill that also specialize in other services, such as waxing, so mom can be shiny, sparkly, and baby-smooth.
Elegant may be the word friends choose to describe the beautiful container gardens you can make for mom, with the help of experts at the National Arboretum. Saturday, May 8th, they are hosting two classes: Strawberry Jar Herb Garden from 10 am-12 noon, and Summer Proof Container Garden from 2-4 pm. Roll up your sleeves to make a long-lasting gift. Details here.
Roses are Red, Violets are Blue … If you want to go a more traditional route and order mom a beautiful bouquet, the Eastern Market area is a veritable flower district. You can choose from Blue Iris Flowers inside Eastern Market, Greenworks, Flowers on the Hill, and English Garden Floral Design. For a bouquet of a different type, try Edible Arrangements.
