The To Do List

The last thing you might be thinking about  this morning after last night’s Cinco de Mayo  festivities is the weekend. But take two  ibuprofen, pour an extra-large coffee and  settle in for this week’s to do list.

Top on my personal to do list this weekend is the Capitol Hill Restoration Society House  and Garden Tour.

Thursday

In case you missed it yesterday, the Capitol Riverfront Market opens today at 3 pm.  Head over early to be one of the first 50 people for a $5 off coupon.

Then at 7:30 pm, the monthly Modern Underground series hosted by Laura Tsaggaris at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse returns. This month’s featured artists are Shane Hines and Matt Hutchison (Fools and Horses). $7 at the door.

Friday

What’s better than an outdoor movie? And as of this morning, Friday’s weather is looking almost delightful! This week’s feature at “Friday Night at the Movies” is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. 7 pm in Lincoln Park, bring a blanket and some cold drinks. The National Community Church is sponsoring and they’ll even have some free popcorn and little prizes for the kids. FREE

Saturday

On your way to Eastern Market Saturday morning, stop by Port City Java from 10 am to 3 pm for your chance to win a 2010 Porsche! Hill resident Neda Wilson and brother of a locally educated leading cancer researcher and childhood Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor Omar Dawood are heading up the national campaign Drive Away Cancer. The proceeds from each $25 raffle ticket will support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s focus on blood cancer research.

Then on your way home from Eastern Market, stop by the book sale at Southeast Library. From 10 am to 3 pm, stop by the library to stock up on cheap summer reads. You’ll need ‘em while lounging on the beach at Bethany Beach next month.

Make Saturday night date night. The On LOCation concert series starts at 8 p.m. The recipient of the prestigious NEA National Heritage Award, Simon Shaheen, a violin and oud virtuoso and celebrated genre-exploring composer, will appear with members of Qantara, his all-star group that fuses Arab, Jazz, Western Classical and Latin American music.

Sunday

Cap off the weekend with the final installment of “Opera in Cinema at the Atlas: Don Carlo,” a performance in four acts. The version presented here is the 1884 four-act version that Verdi reduced and changed into Italian from the original 1867 five-act version in French. Curtain at 2 pm. $20 at the door.

All Weekend

And last but not least, our beloved Nats are home all weekend. Head out to the ballpark with the family. If Mom likes baseball, the first 20,000 fans on Sunday will get a Nats water bottle. The gift that keeps on giving…

Enjoy your weekend!
