New Capitol Riverfront Market debuts tomorrow

Don’t you just love Spring on the Hill? So many fresh food options available…and now there’s one more to add to your list. And since my tomato plants out back aren’t looking like they are going to make it this year (I clearly do not have what is called a “green thumb”), I’m looking for something other than what my local grocery store has to offer.

While there isn’t much information available, it looks like the Capitol Riverfront Market will feature about ten local farmers and vendors, selling fresh fruits and veggies, baked goods, herbs and spices, olive oil, honey, desserts and flowers. Hopefully more information about the vendors will be available after the market opens. Maybe you’ll even see a feature here about some of them …

According to the press release issued by the Capitol Riverfront BID, “The goal of this new market is to feature fresh produce and locally prepared foods, create awareness of local specialty products, and emphasize the importance of supporting local farmers,” explains the market manager, Mike Berman. “The Capitol Riverfront Market will be the perfect place to buy items for a fresh summer dinner, or for packing a picnic to take to Thursday outdoor movies in Canal Park and to a Nationals baseball game.”

Open Thursdays from 3 to 7 pm weekly through November at the intersection of New Jersey Avenue, SE, and M Street, SE, adjacent to the Navy Yard Metro (New Jersey Ave exit).

The fresh food market is presented by the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District along with Diverse Markets Management and The Donohoe Company. The Capitol Riverfront BID has been hosting some great events and along with this new market; I would definitely recommend checking out some of their upcoming events.

So head over tomorrow to check out the latest addition to locally-sourced food in our neighborhood. And get there early! The first 50 people will receive a $5 off coupon for any purchase at the market.
