We know everyone has an opinion on the debate over whether or not to close 7th Street to traffic on weekends, as seen in the comments on a previous post on the issue. The street was closed after the fire at Eastern Market to allow for space for displaced vendors and to help maintain a pedestrian-safe environment throughout the construction. Now that the construction has been completed, questions about allowing vehicular traffic on weekends, as was allowed pre-fire, are being raised again. Councilmember Tommy Wells’ office says that they have heard very strong reaction for and against the closing and intend to allow the community to be part of final decision.
A community meeting has been scheduled for July 7, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:30 at Tyler Elementary School at 1001 G Street, SE. to “share your thoughts, ideas and experiences as we discuss all aspects of this matter.” Additionally, representatives from the District Department of Transportation, Public Space Management Administration and Office of Property Management current Market Manager will attend and be available to answer questions.
