Hine School Site Development Update

On Wednesday night, the four candidates for developing the Hine Junior High School site presented their proposals to community members.  The full presentations can be viewed at the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development’s website.

A brief description of the four proposals:

  • Western Development Group:  In partnership with Florida consultant Jonathan Lewis and Peter Lewis of Progressive Corp, the group is proposing a project call the The Leadership Campus.  It calls for a campus environment for nonprofit organizations who would otherwise not be able to afford office space in the city.  Their proposal includes offices and residences for nonprofits and their employees, as well as space for retail, restaurants, and 500 parking paces.
  • EastBanc Inc and Stanton Development: This group is proposing a plaza on C Street, residential on 8th Street, office space at the corner of 7th and Pennsylvania, an interior courtyard, green roof and gardens, office and performance space for the Shakespeare Theater Co., and an interior courtyard.
  • DSF Group/Menkiti Group/StreetSense: residential, retail, open space, and a Kimpton Hotel.
  • Seven Penn Partners

What types of business would you like to see in the the new storefronts?

According to Barbara Riehle of neighborhood advocacy group EMMCA (Eastern Market Metro Community Association),  the next meetings for the Hine development are:

  1. This Saturday, June 13th, there will be an open house at Stanton Development, 305 7th Street, SE, above Marvelous Market from 11am to 2pm for neighbors to stop by, look at the Stanton Park/Eastbanc proposal and ask questions.
  2. Monday, June 15th, the developer StreetSense, which has partnered with the Tiger Woods Foundation, will make a special presentation to EMMCA and hear members’ comments and concerns.
  3. Tuesday, June 23rd at 7 pm ANC-6B will invite the four developers back for another go-round, place TBD.
  4. Tuesday, June 30th at 7 pm, ANC-6B will hold a special call meeting, without the developers present, presumably to craft an official ANC-6B position to communicate to the Mayor and to hear testimony from interested groups and individuals.

If you live near the Eastern Market metro station and you want to be part of EMMCA, send an email with your name and address to barbara@erols.com.
