Monday Morning Share

Many Hill Elementary schools employ a social curriculum called Responsive Classroom, a social curriculum that includes the morning circle time. Each Monday at circle time each person is asked to share one thing they did over the previous weekend. One. And it needs to be true so no imaginary trips to Disney World or dinner with Miley Cyrus.

We thought it would a fun way to ease into the week so I’ve asked all THIH writers to share what they did on the Hill this weekend. One thing I learned was that some of us lead far more exciting lives than others…and I missed out on some Mint Juleps.

Claudia Friday evening a bunch of my girlfriends and I went to dinner at Liberty Tree, then enjoyed the great weather on The Red and The Black’s back patio, followed by a round at The Pug and then a trip to Little Miss Whiskeys. I spent most of Saturday on Barracks Row helping out at Taste of 8th and then went to Nichole’s patio for mint juleps, derby pie, and to watch the Kentucky Derby.  I managed to pick the winning horse, earning myself a lovely jack pot to cover my expenses from my bar crawl the night before.

Jon I enjoyed a delicious Saturday afternoon with my family at Taste of 8th, spent a lot of time on yard work trying to rejuvenate our plants, and had a sadly disappointing brunch at the Argonaut.  We’ll give the A another chance though, perhaps for dinner instead.

Kyra This Saturday we were one of many families hosting a yard sale. We sat in the hot sun, peddling our wares and begging for a cool breeze. After a much needed shower and nap, we decided to spend our earnings on dinner at Matchbox. As we walked through Lincoln Park, something suddenly felt familiar. It was the same summer day I’d come to expect as a kid. We laughed and talked about our day as we ate dinner, and only endured one minor meltdown at the hands of a 19-month-old wanting more tomatoes. And when we walked home, the air felt a little cooler.

Liz I served up food as fast as Cava could grill them up for Taste of 8th, enjoyed a hit and run mint julep in the hot sun on a hopping patio overlooking an infamous intersection, had a yard sale whereby her husband’s college art collection and golf clubs have now taken up residence two doors down, and indulged my whimsy at three open houses of very different Hill homes  all united by their spiral or otherwise Liz-challenging staircases.

Nichole This weekend I told people that they could find their Ted’s Bulletin milkshakes at Matchbox at Taste of 8th and hosted a great group of humans and canines on my patio for juleps, steaks and derby pie.

Maria I volunteered at Taste of Eighth, ate ice cream at Baskin Robbins (when are we going to get some frou-frou ice cream store?), checked out the open houses, and ate at Starfish Café for the first time (very yummy).

Jen I spent Saturday watching kids play soccer in Anacostia park, dragged mine to Taste of 8th for Ted’s milkshakes and brought my younger child to a film shoot at the Pug for a 48 Hour Film Festival Mockumentary about a championship beer pong team. Thanks to Tony T for just being cool.
