Good morning readers! The calendar may only say August 22 today but for many of your smaller neighbors today is the most exciting, anticipated and, let’s be honest, dreaded day of the entire year. Yes, DC Public Schools begin a new school year today.
I’m not quite sure why our schools have been starting so early these past few years. I have an about-to-be sixth grader and I remember a time when school started after Labor Day. There is something just cosmically wrong with starting school before that day. The summer is still going strong yet here you are sitting, sweating, at your desk.
I’m sure it has something to do with No Child Left Behind, testing and AYP and so I’m looking for Arne Duncan to fix it. Somehow I think this will be a low priority, considering the dismal state of just about everything these days.
Kids, I feel for you.
What did everyone else do this weekend?
Maria: Had a quiet weekend at home, having discovered the untold delights of Netflix on Wii. In between movies and shows, she was able to eat some tasty lobster at Senart’s; have a relaxing pedicure; and take in a couple of walks.
Nichole: I enjoyed a quiet Friday night in, and then embarked to Petworth with the pups to visit friends who spent the better part of summer out of town. We grilled steaks and had a cocktail contest (where everyone was a winner!) and caught up while the pups played in the huge corner yard. Saturday morning, I saw my summer boarder off as she headed back to grad school in Michigan and then I took the pups back to Petworth to make good on my promise to make bloodies and salsa verde for brunch. When I got back home, I was greeted with the very pleasant surprise of two wayward THIHers on my patio, and we capped off the weekend with my soon-to-be-famous cherry ‘ritas and a very important conversation about old lady perfume.
Jon: Spent a relaxing Friday afternoon at the Capitol Skyline Pool, then grilled pizza at home for dinner. Saturday was spent focused on the pre-K set: dance recital at CHAW in the morning and a birthday party for a 2-year old and 3-year old in the afternoon at our friends’ house in Silver Spring. Unfortunately the monsoon-like rains Friday night flooded our basement a bit, so we spent a part of Sunday morning cleaning up/throwing out/repackaging items in plastic crates. Sunday evening brought us a lovely dinner at Lavagna followed by a fro-yo treat at 32 Below.
Jen: We ended our beach vacation and drove home singing along with our collective new obsession, the cast album of the Book of Mormon. (Relax, only the non-profane numbers with youngsters in the car. So grateful they have inherited our sense of humor.) Sunday all my men went to the Nats game (kids under 12 got duffel bags!) while I did laundry, listened to Dolly Parton and went to yoga. Our kids have one more week of summer thanks to their charter school’s calendar (still before Labor Day though, grr.) so we are not the least bit ready.
