Good Morning! Welcome to Summer. Well, sure, technically summer is a few weeks off and the kids are still in school a bit longer but the pools are open and backyard/side porch/balcony grills are fired up.
The high temps came on hard this weekend but it didn’t deter any of us from taking part in Memorial Day solemnities/festivities. I was out of town so I missed the bikers here for Rolling Thunder which I have always found fascinating. I want to hear all about the parades and cook outs. (Up north we often refer to these as barbecues.Discuss.)
Tell me, what did you do this weekend?
Nichole: Friday after a Bikram class, I checked out Swampoodle at the Uline Arena, followed by cocktails at Wisdom. (thank you, Maria!) Saturday I hit Bikram again and then spent a little time sitting on my patio (which resulted in my finally figuring out a name for the new pup – welcome, Elroy!) followed by porch and roof sitting and bbqing over in Mt. Pleasant. Sunday saw 2 Petworth bbqs. On Monday, I sat on my patio and then went to Argo for dinner!
Claudia: My office was closed on Friday so I had a great four-day weekend in town. Along with a packed schedule of laziness and relaxation, I squeezed in a pedicure, lunch at Seventh Hill, a picnic and concert at Yards Park, brunch at Smith Commons, a run at the National Arboretum, a trip to the Air & Space Museum at Dulles, kayaking on the Potomac, and some pool time. Somehow sitting in traffic on the way to the beach just didn’t sound as appealing as everything I could do right here..
Maria: On Friday, after looking at some real estate, Nichole and I caught the awesomeness that was “Swampoodle” and then had cocktails at Wisdom (and if you haven’t had a lavender vodka with grapefruit juice, you are not living). On Saturday, I said hello to the Monkeys’ Uncles and delivered some handmade mini-lavender wands (go get one!); had a ball playing Yikerz and Spot On with Kathleen at Labyrinth; had a solo lunch at the Ted’s Bulletin bar; had a post-gut-bomb nap; and then enjoyed a lovely night outside Senart’s Oyster House, where the cocktails are POTENT! Sunday was spent strengthening myself with huevos rancheros at the Argonaut; looking at more real estate (which is clearly getting in the way of long-term grocery shopping); and playing with the kiddos. Monday was spent looking at MORE real estate (I had better get a medal out of this); getting diapers and essentials at the Unsafeway, where I treated poor unsuspecting shoppers to my rendition of the Spice Girls’ 1996 megahit “Wannabe”; and watching
MORE iCARLY. I live dangerously.
Lauren: Friday I went to dinner @ Cava and then kept my sugar addiction at bay for another day by resisting Hello Cupcake. Saturday we went to a party at a friend’s house near H Street. Sunday I was pretty lazy so Monday was spent doing a variety of errands followed by some backyard grilling.
Liz: I tried all weekend to work up the courage to run in the heat but am still trying. I will have Just Done It by the time you have read this, I promise myself! Anyway, since I had spent a couple of days in the Shenandoah, I caught up on Hill news at Cheverly, of course, where I learned that School Within a School, at Peabody, is eyeing Hine JHS development project for expansion, that Marvelous Market now sells Sugar Daddies a la carte, and that they are all the rage, and that potential babysitters for Hill families run rampant here. Also, I spotted the best technique for carrying a melon in the Watermelon Relay but ain’t sharing until my kids are old enough to compete.
Jon: We took in the Nationals game on Saturday afternoon, learning that cotton candy buys us exactly one inning of sitting time. Sunday we ventured to the National Building Museum to take in the Lego exhibit for the second time and the “Designing Tomorrow” exhibit about the 1930s World’s Fairs for the first time. That was followed by lunch at Ping Pong Dim Sum, nap time, dinner and a quick ride to Hains Point at sunset. Monday was a mostly leisurely day around the house except for a trip to Target for a new inflatable kiddie pool. We ended the day was a fun barbecue with friends.
Jen: I headed up to NY for our annual girls’ weekend with my mom, aunts and sisters, an event both hilarious and exhausting. We ate and shopped and laughed and I saw Jason Shwartzman. I can also report that the fedora is still big in hipstery Brooklyn. Who knew? I celebrated my birthday Sunday and headed back on the train with some new dresses, a jar of pricey pickles and a plastic rug. After a carbtastic weekend I craved sushi so we checked out Kushi at City Vista and loved it. Monday we welcomed the kids back and I planted myself at Cheverly Pool enjoying the cooler breeze and some lukewarm gossip.
