Mouthwatering Fare, Jazz & Dumpsters at the SWS Auction

uploaded to Flickr by Tesla Aldrich

It’s hard to say which is more tempting about the upcoming School-Within-a-School at Peabody Jazz Gala & Auction:  the tasty vittles or the diverse items on the block. Each year I get tons of invitations to attend neighborhood school auctions to bid on items like those offered by SWS (hands off the coveted  seasonal membership to the storied Cheverly Pool and private wine tastings!). I’m not a high roller so I’ve always been a bit skeptical if I would have a chance to walk away with something decadent. But it’s the menu at this April 9th auction at St. Marks Episcopal Church that really has my mouth watering and I’m looking for a mom-date to join me. And if there are any babysitting services on the block, I’m all over it!

For $35 you’ll get unlimited food and drink to the jazz tones of The Kash Wright Trio, and with unlimited access to  everything from chilled carrot ginger soup, Thai spinach peanut wontons, asian meatballs with sesame lime dipping sauce, shrimp and mango with glass noodles, coconut cashew shredded chicken with noodles, chorizo empanaditas, and potato onion Spanish frittata with red pepper romesco sauce. Oh, and there will be passed mini vanilla milkshakes and chocolate chip cookies. You just have to open your mouth and say please as former SWS students posing as waiters whirl around the nave at St. Mark’s. Your tummy can be feted like this by the chefs at Foodie Custom Catering and Event Design, and your thirst whetted with sparkling water, wine and beer, for $35. Seriously.

Want to know why I chose a dumpster to illustrate this post?

The event runs from 6-10 p.m. and the live auction begins at 9 p.m. — after the open bar has been open for three hours. Just fish around and pull out that checkbook, pal. You could get a year-long movie pass for two at AMC Theatres, an iPad, or a meal with the education “It Girl” DC Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson. And then, for those of you who have perhaps amassed too much auction stuff in the past, Ace Recycling of DC, is donating a 30-yard dumpster delivered to anywhere in the DC Metro area.

SWS at Peabody is the Emilio Reggio Program for pre-K and kindergarten students located on the third floor of the adorable big red schoolhouse on Stanton Park. To find out more and buy tickets visit the auction website.
