Of Found Art and Memories

Photo provided by Samantha Leaf Many thanks to Samantha Leaf, of the 200 block of 15th Street SE, for responding to our request to share stories about Christmas trees and their associated memories and traditions.

My dad passed away on November 27th.  Soon after, my mom began
searching for male angels that she and I could hang on our Christmas trees in his memory.  After her frantic searches turned up only childish cherubs and porn-stars-with-wings (neither of which, fortunately, represent my dad), my aunt stepped in.  She’s a recycled materials artist and was able to tweak the steamer wing angels she’s been making for years to create what she calls a “Kenny Angel.”  Since my tree is tiny, he’s my topper.  Christmas won’t be the same this year, but at least I’ll have my angel.
