PSA 107 Monthly Meeting Report

Jared Critchfield attends PSA 107’s meetings regularly. Here’s his take on the June 18, 2009 PSA 107 (Police Service Area) meeting:

1. ANC Commissioners Carol Green and Will Hill hosted the meeting. Douglas Klein, Assistant US Attorney (1D Community Prosecutor), also attended.

2. MPD Lt. Daniel Ewell (daniel.ewell@dc.gov) said there were four robberies in our PSA since the May 21st meeting.  He reminded us to remove everything from cars as they are easy targets.  Thefts from autos recently include laptops, cameras, and gps devices.  Cars with out of state tags have been more susceptible to crime–let your guests know.

3. Lt. Ewell said thefts are increasing at Safeway and Harris Teeter.  He has urged management at both stores to move higher priced items away from entrances so there’s less of an enticement to grab and run.

Do you attend your local PSA meetings? Why, or why not?

3. Lt. Ewell reminded everyone to call 911 when they see suspicious persons in the neighborhood, and to keep alleys clean.  If the alleys are clean, the police can more readily recognize and track recent behavior when drug/sex/drinking paraphernalia is left behind.

4. The National Night Out will be held August 4, 2009.  It will likely be at Spielberg Park or Payne Elementary School.  More details will follow–if you want to help finalize the details, please contact Lt. Ewell.

5. Lt. Ewell would like more participation from residents in preparing the newsletter (currently Carol Green, Will Hill, and Ed Copenhaver do it), the PSA meetings (the same three people), and National Night Out.  Contact him to assist.

6. Two neighborhood watch groups are organized and leading almost daily walks.  The 14th Street group meets at the Potomac Metro.  The south of Pennsylvania Avenue group is led by Bill Flynn and Eric Holzherr.  An organizing meeting for Neighborhood Watch will be held Monday night, June 22, at 7 p.m. at Edison-Friendship School (across from Harris-Teeter).

7. See you at the next PSA 107 meeting at Liberty Baptist Church basement, 527 Kentucky Ave, SE on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 7 p.m.
