Office hours: Tommy Wells at SOVA

Yesterday morning council member Tommy Wells and staff took the office to the coffee house, specifically SOVA on H Street, NE. That’s web 2.0 at a local grassroots level — meet the constituents where they are. Even better if they’re caffeinated.

Wells’ Director of Constituent Services Tawanna Shuford says this kind of outreach to the community provides residents a chance to talk one-on-one with the council member and his staff about community concerns and issues.

Wells holds public office hours every 4th Thursday. The next one will be June 25 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The location is TBD.

Also, a few updates from Wells’ office:

City Council has given initial approval to next year’s budget. The budget includes full funding for public safety, education and healthcare. Council member Wells worked to increase funding for the Grandparent Caregiver Subsidy program, designed to help keep children out of foster care. The measure also included new grants for community youth engagement in Ward 6.

Council member Wells pushed through emergency legislation to give small businesses on H Street, NE a six-month extension on their property taxes. The legislation was designed to alleviate some of the burden of street scape construction.

Save the date for Tommy’s the 3rd Annual Ward 6 Family Day – Saturday, June 20th, 11 am – 3 pm, at Rosedale Recreation Center.
