To Do: Weekend of January 5-8

Members of the NSO’s woodwind section perform a free concert this evening at the Hill Center

Hey there Hillfolk! Happy New Year and all that. So far, so good, I guess? How shall we spend the first weekend of 2017?

Tonight, members of the National Symphony Orchestra’s woodwind section perform a free concert at the Hill Center as part of the annual outreach effort NSO in Your Neighborhood. This year the focus is Southeast and Southwest which seems a bit broader that in years past, but who am I to complain? Free art! The quintet is set to perform Alexander Zemlinksy’s Humoreske, Samuel Barber’s Summer Music, Paquito D’Rivera’s Wapango and Theodor Blumer’s Wind Quintet, Op. 52. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Register here.

Friday night, nerds will swarm the Atlas Performing Arts Center for comedian Tim Lee‘s brand of “cerebral comedy.” Lee found fame on YouTube and now tours the nation elevating stand up one science joke at a time. Friday’s show is at 7:30pm but Lee has four performances this weekend. Tickets are $10 – $40. Get yours here.

Saturday, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop hosts an Open House. This free event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and all are welcome to drop in and check out a workshop, catch a performance (including an NSO concert for kids at 11am) and maybe register yourself or your kiddo for a class.

Gallery O/H closes out the holidays and ushers in Mardi Gras season at its annual 12th Night Three-Kings Party. The free event will feature King Cake, a fortune teller, live music by Ian Walters and the Swampkeepers with Phil Wiggins on Harmonica, entertainment, and possibly some fire…Learn more about the event here.

Sunday, maybe check out one of the two plays in previews this weekend at the Atlas. Mosaic Theater presents Charm, a story about a diverse group of young people learning the rules and reason of etiquette from an African American transgender woman. The show, based on a true story, will run through February 5 January 29 and tickets are $20-$40 60. Get yours now.

SCENA Theatre previews Someone is Going to Come. The poetic play is about a couple who move to a remote house and yet grow increasingly paranoid a visitor will come. I am an extrovert and even I am freaked out by that description. The play also runs through February 5th and tickets are $20-$35. Tickets are available here.

Have a peaceful first weekend of 2017. See you here next week.
