Krampus March returns to H Street Saturday night to raise money for children’s causes

And we’re off! Happy first day of December. There is a lot happening all over. I heard some ambitious locals threw holiday parties last weekend. It takes tremendous guts to throw a Christmas party over Thanksgiving weekend but that is what we are dealing with, folks. Pace yourselves and stay hydrated.

Tonight there is a party and we’re all invited. The 10th Annual Brickie Awards, sponsored by the office of Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, will be held at the new Apollo building at 600 H Street NE (a.k.a. home of the future Whole Foods) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual awards highlight neighborly businesses, organizations, and individuals in Ward 6. All are welcome to this free event. Meet your neighbors while enjoying food and drinks from Ward 6 businesses.

Friday at 7 p.m. is Movie Night at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church( 4th and Independence Ave., SE.) The film, Middle of Nowhere, Winner of the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of a young woman caught between two worlds and two men in a search for herself. Ruby, a bright medical student, sets aside her dreams when her husband is incarcerated. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. A discussion, led by Parish Associate Alice Bellis, will follow.

The Folger Consort has revived 2007’s The Second Shepherd’s Play at the Folger Theatre, The show, a retelling of the Nativity story and medieval mystery play set to festive English music of the period  weaves together the stories of the shepherds, a sheep thief, and the baby in the manger in Bethlehem. The show runs through December 21st and tickets are $25 – $60. Learn more here.

Saturday, bring the pups to Congressional Cemetery for photos with Santa. Most slots are filled but as of this minute, there are still a few left. The cost is $25 but the value of your dear canine with that jolly old elf is obviously priceless. Book Fido’s appointment now.

Chiarina Chamber Players perform a concert featuring Jewish composers at 3 p.m. at St, Mark’s Church. This group of up and coming musicians take on Mendelssohn’s classical-romantic masterpiece, the Piano Trio No as well as Paul Schoenfield’s bubbly Café Music. Tickets are $10 -$15. Get yours here.

Krampus returns to H Street. The annual costume event raises money for Santa’s Cause DC, an organization which gives gifts and further enrichment to kids in foster care. The evening begins at 5 at Gallery O/H. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m. with Morris Dancers and Fire performers. At 7:15 p.m., the Krampus walk begins, led by the women’s percussion group Batalá and Santa himself. A donation of $10 is suggested, or you can bring an unwrapped Christmas gift instead.

The Union, a DC-based men’s accessories retailer is hosting a pop-up event at Union Market all weekend. If the men in your life would love American-made merchandise including hats, ties, pocket squares, lapel pins and other statement pieces then head on over.

Sunday afternoon, check out the pop-up Holiday Bazaar at East Side Yoga. Local women-owned businesses will also be offering samples, discounts, and demos, and will have complimentary tea (from Capital Teas on Barracks Row) and treats (from Hill-based Capitol Sweets) on hand for Bazaar guests.

That evening, get into the holiday spirit at the Atlas Performing Arts Center with the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra: A Bohemian Christmas. While the actual U Street landmark Bohemian Caverns is no more, its resident big band lives on and performs from time to time. Expect jazzy versions of holiday classics as well as a reading of A Night Before Christmas. There are two concerts, one at 5 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. Get your tickets here.
