The Nats begin the playoffs this weekend here at home and though I can’t claim to be a huge sports fan this still makes me so anxious. How shall we distract ourselves?

Tonight at 5:30 commemorate the 400th anniversary of the passing of the Bard with a Jazz Funeral. Tulane University’s Liberty Brass Band performed the traditional send-off back in April on the actual anniversary but they will recreate it tonight for you for free because we are all sad every day Shakespeare is not here to finally dispel the ridiculous “he didn’t really write the plays” rumors. Register for the event here.

Friday is busy at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW.) Taffety Punk Theatre opens The Iliad this weekend. A modern-day retelling of Homer’s tale of war from the point of view of one narrator played by company member Esther Williamson. She is joined onstage by Hand Grenade Job, an ethereal punk band devoted to “hymns of undoing”. Tickets are $15 and the show runs through October 22nd. Buy your ticket here.

Mentalist Alain Nu hold a Mind Reading Workshop/ Merlot tasting from 7:30pm – 9pm. Damn, they need to offer this course to all undergrads. This is the first in a series. Think about how you will impress the crowds at your holiday parties! Tickets are $45 for this event but they are $35 in advance so next time plan ahead. But you knew I was going to say that. Learn more and register here.

Friday is Drive In night at Union Market. This time, the offering is Ghostbusters. Tickets are $10 per car and the film begins at 7pm. Book your ticket here.

The Capitol Riverfront BID is throwing a pre- Nats game pep rally at Yards Park. There will be live music, food vendors, and Bluejacket beers available for purchase. The event is free to attend and things should kick off about two hours before the first pitch which is bizarrely slated for a 5:38 start time.

Saturday The Friends of the Southeast Library (FOSEL) will hold a book sale this Saturday, October 9, 2016.  The sale begins around 10:00 am and ends just before 3 pm. They sold lots of books last month and are happy to accept donations, even at the sale itself.

Local bluegrass band  Dead Men’s Hollow performs at Congressional Cemetery at 7pm. Their set will include original and traditional music with a murder ballad or two thrown because ’tis the season. Tickets are $20 and you can get yours here.

Sunday vocalist Akua Allrich pays homage to artists Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba Saturday night at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Allrich will be backed by a full band and together they will bring new life to well-loved songs by two legends. There are two concerts at 6:30 and 8:30 and tickets are $20 -$25. Get yours here.
