Throwing Pots to celebrate Pottery on the Hill’s 5th Year

unnamed-117 of the nation’s top ceramic artists bring functional pottery – and a chance to make a piece of your own pottery

Imagine starting your day drinking a cup of coffee from a handmade mug that a potter spent hours crafting in the Minnesota countryside during the midst of a snowy winter. Envision retelling the story about how there is literally no other set of dinnerware like that one in existence – and how it almost wasn’t because of the massive rains that almost derailed the kiln firing! How about giving a vase as a wedding or holiday gift, knowing that the potter dug the wild clay herself?

Once you visit Pottery on the Hill from October 28-30 and meet 17 of the nation’s top ceramic artists (we’re talking absolute rock stars of the art world here), you’ll have a whole different take on functional pottery and its use in your every day life.

The weekend kicks off with a tickets preview reception on Friday night, offering guests the opportunity to meet the artists and have the first chance at purchasing their works. A free beer sampler made at a Pottery Jam at Red Dirt Studio will be available to the first 100 people who attend the preview reception. On Saturday and Sunday, the show and sale is free and open to the public.

New this year is the Pottery on Wheels! (POW!) truck. On Saturday and Sunday during the show, the POW! Truck will be in the Hill Center plaza to let the public make pottery with Sam Taylor and other renowned potters. POW! will offer their programming to students at Maury Elementary School and the Field School as well earlier in the week.

“Come and make pottery with us! Make or “throw” a cup, decorate a cup and then trade the cup for one of the hundreds of finished and fired cups on display. We call it ‘Make a Cup, Take a Cup,’ for kids of all ages,” says Taylor. “We hope we will have given away or traded close to 1000 cups by the time we leave DC!”
