Labor Day Weekend is here. Though we will surely be able to wear flip flops for another month or more and the official season change is a few weeks off, summer as a concept, lifestyle and verb will end.

So put those white shoes on for one last dance. Here’s some ideas for where to wear them:

Tonight, East City Books hosts author Gregg Shapiro as he reads and discusses his new short story collection, How to Whistle. The stories are centered on gay life, nostalgia and recollections of the past. The reading begins at 6pm and is free. Learn more here.

Maketto hosts its first Cafe Sessions Open Mic night from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Friday is another Drive-In showing at Union Market. Bring the kids and chow down on snacks, grab some drinks and sing some risqué lyrics about teen sexual coercion. (But it was SUMMER!) Don’t worry, it will just go over their heads. Tickets are $10 per car. (Get them here.)  The parking lot opens at 6pm and the movie starts at 8pm.

Friday ARTnight at CHAW this week is Working from the Figure. Students will work from a nude model in an adults-only, uninstructed, monitored, 3-hour walk-in, drawing session. It is highly suggested that those who attend have at least some basic or prior drawing experience from the life model. The event  welcomes both beginners and practicing, professional artists. Participants are encouraged to help each other and advise, as well as bring snacks or refreshments to share.  Easels, tray tables, and drawing boards are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee is $15. For more information call (202) 547-6839.

Only a few more Fridays to enjoy the free concerts at Yards Park. This week is a Journey cover band, Almost Journey, so you obviously are going. Why am I even telling you?

Saturday head to the Atlas for Scena Theatre’s production of Report to the Academy by Franz Kafka. As with all Kafka this is bound to be an uplifting, boy meets girl next door, feel good piece. Kidding. It’s actually about an intelligent ape who is captured and learns to imitate his captors and then gives a report on his findings to a scientific academy. I got chills just typing that. Tickets are $20-$35 (Get yours here.)  and the show runs through September 25th.

It’s the last weekend for most DC outdoor pools so Sunday try to claim a last little piece of summer. Just wear your sunblock.
