Capital Fringe arts festival opens tonight!

Hey Summer! Now that the 4th is over and we are nigh on to Bastille Day, it is time to take action and get on to summering for real. It’s hot and muggy so there is no excuse now.

How do we start?

Tonight at 6pm learn to make Union Market’s Toli Moli’s Burmese layered desert drink: Falooda at the Test Kitchen. Then get in on the action by engaging in Falooda Wars with fellow students. Invent your own awesome new falooda flavors, make friends and eat treats. Tickets are $40 and you can register here.

Congressional Cemetery hosts a summer Twilight Tour of the grounds and chapel beginning at 5:30. Tickets are $10 and are available here.

Capital Fringe begins tonight and the epicenter of this eclectic festival is the Florida Avenue/H Street area until July 31st. This festival is open to all kinds of artists and genres and is frequently a great place for companies and artists to test new work and find new audiences. There are too many performances to mention here, so I suggest spending some time looking over the schedule to find some things to check out.

Friday is the monthly Truckeroo event in the Bullpen at the Fairgrounds by Nationals Park. Maybe skip breakfast that morning so you can fully take advantage of the crazy number of dining options? Where else can you follow your pizza course with a poutine entree with a taco chaser? Pace yourselves friends: You have all day. Truckeroo is from 11am to 11pm and is free. Enjoy live music and people watching while you digest and prep for second dinner.

The Folger Shakespeare Library hosts another CrossTalk DC event at 6pm, this time focusing on the Muslim experience in America. Besheer Mohamed, senior researcher at the Pew Research Center will lead the discussion which is free though reservations are encouraged.

Saturday, the Friends of the Southeast Library (403 7th St SE) hosts its monthly book sale from 10am to 3pm. Stop and find a literary bargain and support one of our local libraries.

The Fridge Gallery (516 8th Street SE, Rear alley) hosts an opening reception for artist Kate Campagna’s exhibit, The Swamp Breeds Beautiful Creatures, from 7pm to 11pm. Robert may need to attend to once again address the whole DC-was-built-on-a-swamp legend….
